Jamie Lee Curtis reveals she wants to join Netflix’s live-action One Piece show adaptation and knows exactly which character she wants to play. Based on Eiichiro Oda’s ongoing manga series of the same name, the fantasy adventure revolves around Monkey D. Luffy, captain of the Straw Hat Pirates who has the superhuman ability to stretch his body to elastic proportions after eating a Devil Fruit. One Piece follows Luffy and his crew as they embark on an adventure to find the titular fabled treasure that will allow him to become the King of the Pirates.

Iñaki Godoy is leading the cast of the live-action One Piece show as Luffy alongside Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero Gibson as Usopp, Taz Skylar as Sanji, Peter Gadiot as Shanks and Ilia Isorelýs Paulino as Alvida. Development on the adaptation was first announced in mid-2017 when Weekly Shōnen Jump partnered with Tomorrow Studios for an American live-action adaptation with Oda on as executive producer and Netflix acquiring the rights in early 2020. As filming commences on the live-action One Piece show, one Hollywood A-lister is looking to get in on the fun.

While appearing at the latest Oscars red carpet, Jamie Lee Curtis took a moment to speak with TikTok user Julian Green, known by the username Juju, to discuss their shared love of anime. As they discussed the live-action One Piece show, Curtis revealed she is still interested in joining the adaptation and which character she’d like to play if given the chance to join. See what Curtis shared below:

“I’m not gonna get to play [Nico Robin], I’m a little old now. But there’s that old crone lady, not Nico Robin, [Kureha]. Maybe I can be Kureha, she wears those really low bellbottoms, she’s looking a little nasty, but she has that long stringy gray hair. My Ruby said that would be what I would play.”

First introduced in Chapter 134 of the ongoing One Piece manga, Kureha is an eccentric elderly doctor operating on Drum Island who is occasionally referred to as a witch for her more forceful methods of treatment, reclusive personality and spry nature, despite being 141 years old. Though she has these odder traits, Kureha is also best known for having been a mentor and adoptive mother figure to Tony Tony Chopper, one of the members of the Straw Hat Pirates and a doctor himself who transformed into a a blue-nosed reindeer after eating the Zoan-type Human-Human Fruit. Given Curtis’ clear passion for the material and desire to play the character, as well as the similarity in appearances between her and Kureha, it would be an interesting decision to bring the Golden Globe winner into the fold for the live-action One Piece show.

Though Curtis is best known for her status as a horror icon thanks to the Halloween franchise, she has actually revealed in the past her love for One Piece as well as World of Warcraft, even going so far as planning to officiate her daughter’s upcoming wedding dressed as Jaina Proudmoore from Blizzard’s long-running video game. With Tony Tony Chopper not confirmed to be appearing in Netflix’s live-action show, the likelihood of Kureha appearing in the series would have to come from a second season, though given the recent cancellation of the streamer’s Cowboy Bebop adaptation, season 2 plans are currently unknown. While audiences await further word on the live-action show, they can catch up with the One Piece anime available to stream on Netflix, Hulu and Crunchyroll.
