Jason Segel is keen to do How I Met Your Mother season 10, according to director Pamela Fryman. Originally airing on CBS in September 2005, How I Met Your Mother became a huge success, running nine seasons and 208 episodes, before concluding with a highly controversial finale in September 2013. Revered for its unique structure, off-beat humor, layered characters, and dramatic storylines, the show is considered one of the greatest American sitcoms of the 2000s and spawned a recent spin-off, How I Met Your Father, which has just wrapped its first season.

The storyline of How I Met Your Mother follows hopeless romantic Ted Mosby who, as a framing device in the year 2030, recounts to his teenage son and daughter the events that led him to meet and fall in love with their mother. Created by Craig Thomas and Carter Bays, the show received 91 award nominations during its run, winning 21 of them, with Fryman, who executive produced the show, and directed all but 12 episodes, receiving a Primetime Emmy nomination for her work. In the nine years it has been off the air, there are still calls for the show to be revived, with some fans demanding a different ending, whilst others have called for How I Met Your Mother season 10.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with TVLine to discuss the finale of How I Met Your Father, which featured an unexpected cameo from a much-loved How I Met Your Mother character, Fryman addressed the future of the franchise and revealed she has discussed the possibility of a season 10 with the cast. Though the show has had nearly a decade off the air, according to the Philadelphia native, everyone is still in contact and supportive of one another’s careers, including the cast members and creators Bays and Thomas. Indeed, the Frasier director also revealed the positive reaction to her suggestion of a How I Met Your Mother season 10 from one cast member in particular – Jason Segel, who played Marshall. ‘Everybody is rooting for everybody, always, in such a big way, so when this [sequel series] happened in such a promising way, everybody was just thrilled. I mean, I keep texting them and going, “Season 10! We could do it guys!” Jason [Segel] is always the first one to go “I’m in, just tell me where to show up.”’

Following recent revivals of successful shows such as Sex and the City, it does feel like there is still an audience for once-popular comedies to return and the nostalgia that streaming platforms allow people to experience has perhaps fed into this. Fryman’s comments seem to suggest that, whilst there is nothing officially on the table, there is interest among the original cast to entertain the idea of revisiting the show again at some point. This could become much easier due to streaming platforms giving much more leeway in terms of picking up canceled shows and breathing new life into them and streaming them for enjoyment from audiences both old and new, as Netflix did with Arrested Development.

Of course, any chance of a How I Met Your Mother season 10 would be reliant on the interest and availability of the core cast, which, in addition to Segel, includes Cobie Smulders, Alyson Hannigan, Josh Radnor, and Neil Patrick Harris. It’s likely that their schedules would be a big determining factor in any decision-making. There is also the fact that the show was very much of its era, and any storylines or plots would have to account for modern times, whilst still holding true to the characters and narrative of the show, which could prove tricky. Any chance of a revival is likely to be influenced by the success of How I Met Your Father, which has been renewed for a second season, so audiences will have to wait and see what the future might hold to know if there is any chance of a revival happening.
