Flula Borg, who plays Javelin in The Suicide Squad, shares photos of his impressive workout transformation for the film. Best known for his work on Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy, writer/director James Gunn’s first DC outing, The Suicide Squad, features a slew of lesser-known, oddball comic book characters. As a sequel/soft reboot of David Ayer’s Suicide Squad (2016), Task Force X members Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), and Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney) are joined by newcomers, including Bloodsport (Idris Elba), Peacemaker (John Cena), Ratcatcher II (Daniela Melchior), Polka Dot Man (David Dastmalchian), and Javelin.

Borg is best known as a comedian, DJ, and YouTuber, who has also had acting roles in The Good Place and Pitch Perfect 2. His character in The Suicide Squad is a former Olympic athlete who is, apparently, very good at committing crimes and/or murder with a javelin. So much so that Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) recruits him to undertake a dangerous mission on the island of Corto Maltese with Task Force X.

Borg recently shared a side-by-side photo on Instagram of his physical transformation for The Suicide Squad. To quote Borg, he added “many kilograms of muskles to [his] body and many degrees of rüdeness to [his] personality” to play his DC villain. Check it out below:

Borg’s commitment to looking the part is certainly admirable, especially considering Javelin’s position as a comedic relief character. Javelin’s weapon of choice has more screen time than its initial wielder. Despite Gunn describes it as a relatively useless weapon in the past, the javelin plays an interesting role in the film thanks to Harley Quinn. Based upon his absence in much of The Suicide Squad’s promotional footage, it should come as no surprise that Javelin himself is one of the film’s many casualties. That said, The Suicide Squad does not shy away from taking out seemingly safe characters played by recognizable faces.

It’s clear from the press tour that everyone, including those who had limited roles in the film, valued their experience working on/training for The Suicide Squad. The film’s highs are largely a result of its irreverent humor, misfit characters, and violent, R-rated action. While audiences likely won’t see more of Borg as Javelin in the future, Gunn will return to the DC Extended Universe with John Cena’s Peacemaker spinoff series, future films, and potentially other spin-offs. Who knows, maybe Borg’s supervillain body could cameo in an upcoming project or even star in its own prequel series.
