New Spider-Man fan art casts Javier Bardem as evil genius Otto Octavius aka Doctor Octopus. The artwork comes as rumors have been continuing to circulate about the wall-crawler’s future. With the anticipated sequel to Spider-Man: Far From Home still in development, there has been much speculation about the planned third film in the MCU’s Spider-Man trilogy. While some fans think the movie will include a villain who has not been brought to the screen yet like Kraven the Hunter, nothing has been made official, meaning Doc Ock could still have his day.

The comic book character was first brought to life in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films by Alfred Molina, whose Dr. Octavius was a well-meaning scientist driven mad by the mechanical tentacles he created to complete an experiment. More recently, comedian Kathryn Hahn portrayed a female version of Doc Ock in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Named Olivia “Liv” Octavius, this Doc Ock first appears as a deceptively innocent-looking scientist but quickly proves there is more to her than meets the eye.

Now, artist Jackson Caspersz has provided his own take on the character, sharing a new piece of fan art on Instagram that imagines Spanish actor Bardem as Doc Ock. The depiction shows Bardem in a high-tech apparatus in which Doc Ock’s familiar tentacles swarm out in every direction, his mouth twisted into a suitably maniacal grin. Interestingly, the artwork also has Bardem as balding, a nice little nod to the fact that Octavius is usually an out-of-shape older man whose strength comes from his tentacles.

As Caspersz mentions above, many of the fans hoping to see Kraven in the next Spider-Man film have Bardem in mind to play him. Bardem has played his share of villains, having famously portrayed the psychopathic hitman Anton Chigurh in No Country For Old Men and, more recently, the undead pirate hunter Armando Salazar in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. So he certainly has the experience and skill to play a villain such as Doc Ock.

Whether as Kraven or Doc Ock, Bardem would surely be a fine addition to the MCU. The actor has shown before that he is capable of playing driven, charismatic, and terrifying bad guys, traits that would suit either Sergei Kravinoff or Otto Octavius quite well. Given the dark and often chillingly bizarre encounters that Spidey has had with either of these villains, seeing Bardem give one of his trademark memorizing performances as either the borderline-psychotic Kraven or the megalomaniacal Octopus would be an excellent new turn for the MCU’s Spider-Man movies.
