Numerous X-Men received new costumes for the huge Hellfire Gala event last year, including Jean Grey. Jean Grey has had numerous uniforms and outfits during her fifty-nine-year history in Marvel Comics. This one might be one of her most stunning – as well as one of very few Hellfire Gala outfits that have managed to stick around beyond that evening.

The inaugural Hellfire Gala was a five-week X-Men crossover comic event from Marvel throughout June 2021. It spanned fourteen issues and featured the reveal of the newest X-Men team. Marvel has since announced that this year there will be another Hellfire Gala, which will also be held in June. There are likely to be new outfits and it will be interesting to see if any will be popular enough and designed in a way that allows them to remain as official X-Men uniforms.

On Twitter, comic artist Russell Dauterman shared a closer look at Jean Grey’s current costume. It uses her Hellfire Gala outfit as a base and makes adjustments to emphasize practicality for battle. The Tweet from Dauterman includes the model sheet for Jean, including additional looks at her gloves, shoes, and headpiece. This was one of the most stunning outfits at the Hellfire Gala, so it’s great to see it actually get some use in the field.

The changes that were made to Jean’s initial evening wear include the removal of her lengthy train, the closure of the suit’s back, the closure of her shoes, the lowering of her wedges, and the removal of her floating headpiece. Each of these changes makes her outfit far more practical for battle, especially the change of the angle on her footwear and the removal of her train. While the headpiece certainly wasn’t practical and would’ve required the channeling of some of her power to focus on it, it would’ve made for an interesting weapon for Jean to telepathically throw at her foes. However, it would have needed an alternate means of being incorporated into her outfit. Nonetheless, this is a stellar look that Jean absolutely rocks in all of its versions.

Jean has long been a fan-favorite character. She has had numerous costumes over the years, from her own unique costumes to the uniforms she’s shared with her teams. The inclusion of her signature colors in her new costume maintains some of her traditional look, while also being updated with gorgeous accents that make this one stand-out on its own. Considering Jean has always been an integral member of the X-Men, it will also be fun to see if this outfit will be her go-to for the next Hellfire Gala or if she will get a new one, while this one remains her ongoing battle suit. The X-Men frequently change up their attire; even if Jean Grey keeps this outfit, perhaps another member of the team will also don a costume that becomes part of their everyday wardrobe.
