Respawn Entertainment’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is a smash hit largely in part due to the game’s dramatic and unexpected ending. Not only did the game effortlessly tie up loose ends and have a major plot twist, but it provides an opportunity for a sequel given that it leaves the story of Cal Kestis and his allies open to further adventures.

Jedi: Fallen Order follows the story of former Jedi padawan Cal Kestis, a survivor of Emperor Papatine’s Order 66 currently in hiding. However, it’s not long before Cal is offered an opportunity to help rebuild the Jedi Order.

With the Empire hot on his trail, Cal is eventually rescued by a former Jedi named Cere Junda, who is furious that her padawan, Trilla Suduri, has been lured over to the dark side and become an Inquisitor. With Cal’s help, Cere hopes to find the Jedi Holocron, a device which contains the locations of the remaining Force-sensitive children. Doing so holds the key to potentially restoring the Jedi Order and bring peace to the galaxy.

What Happened During Star Wars: Fallen Order?

When Cal eventually finds the Holocron after bouncing from planet to planet in the Star Wars universe, he’s imbued with a vision after touching a mirror located in an ancient temple. In the vision, a Zeffo sage – a new race of Force-sensitive beings introduced in the game – explains how the Zeffo people were eradicated. Cal also sees a vision of himself, seemingly in the future, training young padawan. But he’s horrified when the vision changes and the Inquisitors have suddenly found the children. With Cal unable to protect them, he has to witness their deaths. The vision then switches to Trilla commanding Cal to surrender in order to spare the lives of the remaining force-sensitive children.

After the vision ends, Cal has to face Trilla head-on. But as soon as he touches her lightsaber, he has a vision showing him what happened between Cere and Trilla. During this moment, Trilla manages to steal the Holocron for herself and quickly returns to Nur. With the help of Nightsister Merrin, Cal and Cere are able to infiltrate the Imperial base on Nur, culminating in a final show-down between Cal and Trilla. As Cal manages to get the upper hand, it appears that the conflict is about to be resolved as Cal is ready to pardon Trilla’s life, as the previous vision revealed to him the real reason Trilla was coerced to the Dark Side after being left unprotected by Cere. But that’s when Jedi: Fallen Order’s biggest plot twist occurs, as Darth Vader suddenly appears. Angered that Trilla was unable to retrieve the Holocron and that she was seemingly losing faith in the Dark Side, Vader strikes her down in a swift motion. Afterwards, he turns his attention to Cal and Cere.

Cere is knocked out by Vader almost immediately, leaving only Cal to face the Sith Lord. Cal begins trying to run away from Vader, but just as it seems that Vader has Cal trapped Cere makes a dramatic recovery and comes to his rescue. She taps into the Dark Side once again in order to distract Vader. This gives Cal an opportunity to break the underwater base’s window. As the room begins flooding, Cal and Cere manage to swim away while Vader tries using the Force to prevent further flooding.

At this point, Cere is unconscious from the amount of energy it took her to compete with Vader. But with only one breather between the two of them, Cal and Cere are almost running out of air. Just in the nick of time, however, Merrin manages to rescue the pair. When everyone is safely back on the ship, Cal makes the decision to destroy the Holocron in order to prevent his vision coming true, believing it to be the best way to keep the Force-sensitive children safe and out of the Empire’s reach.

Will There Be A Jedi: Fallen Order 2?

The ending of Jedi: Fallen Order leaves a lot of possibilities for the story to be turned into a sequel. Cal and his allies could potentially find the Force-sensitive children in a different way, despite the Holocron being destroyed, offering them another chance to rebuild the Jedi Order (and to prevent Cal’s vision from coming true). Or, they could go a completely different route and transform the characters into mercenaries.

Although nothing has been officially confirmed there is strong reason to believe that a Jedi: Fallen Order 2 could be in the works. This past February, Kotaku reported that EA is currently working on two Star Wars-themed games, one of which is the sequel to Jedi: Fallen Order. The other game is described as a “smaller, more unusual project,” which is being spearheaded by Montreal’s EA Motive office.

Perhaps even more telling is the fact that Electronic Arts directly said that Jedi: Fallen Order is the beginning of a series of games. EA’s CEO Andrew Wilson called the game the “first title in an entirely new franchise” during an earnings call, making it clear that this isn’t the end of Cal’s adventures. Similarly, it has also been noted that EA recently put up three new job listings which confirmed they’re working on a new Star Wars game, describing it as a “third-person action/ adventure game,” which fits the description of Jedi: Fallen Order. The job listings were for a Senior Character Artist, Level Designer, and Senior Software Engineer.

The action-adventure RPG has sold more than eight million copies as of January 2020, even though the game hasn’t even been out for a year, having debuted only in November 2019 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows. Given how widely successful Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Orderwas, which is heavily in part due to its nail-biting ending, it appears that a sequel is definitely a high possibility, and something which is likely being worked on right now.
