Jeff Goldblum could be returning as Grandmaster in Thor: Love and Thunder after being spotted with the movie’s cast and crew in Australia. The success of Thor: Ragnarok‘s soft reboot of Chris Hemsworth’s god of thunder under Taika Waititi’s direction pushed Marvel Studios to keep the franchise going. Plans for a fourth Thor movie were confirmed in 2019, and Waititi’s involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe quickly infused the franchise with even more talent.

Thor: Love and Thunder will see the return of older MCU characters like Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), Lady Sif (Jaimie Alexander), and the entire Guardians of the Galaxy team. But the movie will also feature a lot of characters Waititi introduced in the last film. Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg and Miek, and the multitude of Asgardian actors – Matt Damon, Sam Neill, and Luke Hemsworth – are all coming back. One character from Thor: Ragnarok that has so far not been officially confirmed to return, though, is Jeff Goldblum’s eccentric leader of Sakarr, the Grandmaster.

Production on Thor: Love and Thunder is taking place in Australia, which has made it a bit easier to track which actors could be part of the movie. Now, there might be some evidence that Jeff Goldblum returns as Grandmaster after all. Wide World of Sports shared an image of the actor at a rugby game with Taika Waititi and Chris Hemsworth. This confirms that Goldblum is in Australia, but it is unknown if it is to film Thor: Love and Thunder as many are speculating. He doesn’t have any other projects officially filming there at the moment, and he doesn’t live there either. It is unlikely, albeit still possible, Goldblum would travel all the way to Australia right now and meet up with the Thor 4 cast and crew if he wasn’t in the movie.

Goldblum’s Grandmaster is one of the final characters shown in Thor: Ragnarok, but he has not been seen again. The revolution on Sakarr left him seemingly out of power, and Ragnarok‘s post-credits scene had him come face-to-face with the locals he previously held power over. The possibility of Goldblum returning as Grandmaster in Thor: Love and Thunder would allow the MCU and Waititi to show what became of the character after the last film. Perhaps it could even push the Elder of the Universe further down a path of villainy and universal manipulation.

Since it is unconfirmed if Goldblum is in Australia to film Thor: Love and Thunder, there is still a chance that Grandmaster won’t make a return. However, Goldblum fits extremely well with the quirky, awkward, and comedic energy of Waititi’s work and is overall a fan-favorite character and actor. If Grandmaster doesn’t appear in Thor: Love and Thunder, it is unclear when Goldblum will return. He’s confirmed he is part of Marvel’s What If…? animated Disney+ series, but there are no official plans for him to appear in any of the upcoming live-action MCU projects.
