Jeff Goldblum is no stranger to memes but the Jurassic Park-inspired “You Did It” is one of the funniest – here’s the hilarious meme explained. Jeff Goldblum’s Dr. Ian Malcolm is without a doubt the greatest character the Jurassic Park franchise has spawned. Not only is he the epitome of cool – sauntering around Isla Nublar in his leather jacket and all-black getup – he’s also the original movie’s main voice of reason and the only character who really questions whether John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) creating a theme park full of cloned dinosaurs was a responsible thing to do.

The suave mathematician/chaos theorist is also the man behind some of Jurassic Park’s best one-liners. From “I’m always on the lookout for a future ex-Mrs Malcolm” to “That is one big pile of s***”, Ian Malcolm boasts some of the most quotable lines in the franchise. He’s also proved to be one of Jurassic Park’s most meme-worthy characters, inspiring a whole host of hilarious content from the “Life, Uh, Finds A Way” and “Shirtless Jeff Goldblum” memes to a ten-minute long video of Ian Malcolm laughing on a loop.

One of the funniest Jeff Goldblum/Ian Malcolm memes out there is “You Did It.” The meme takes its name from a scene early on in Jurassic Park film when Malcolm, Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) and Alan Grant (Sam Neill) encounter their first dinosaur – a brachiosaurus – and Malcolm remarks “You did it. You crazy son of a bitch, you did it,” expressing his disbelief and awe that John Hammond has actually managed to clone the prehistoric beast.

According to Know Your Meme, the “You Did It” meme rose to popularity between 2017 and 2019 with screenshots, videos and GIFs of the Jeff Goldblum scene being used as a reaction image to convey the same disbelief and awe Malcolm felt at seeing his first dinosaur. An early and particularly hilarious example came in late 2017 when Instagram user @drgrayfang posted a picture of the scene with the famous quote and an accompanying caption that read “When you’re s***faced and get your Uber driver to stop at McDonald’s.”

Even Jeff Goldblum himself is in on the “You Did It” meme. In September 2019, Goldblum posted an image of himself and his Jurassic Park co-stars Laura Dern and Sam Neill along with his immortal line to celebrate their forthcoming reunion in the franchise’s next movie Jurassic World: Dominion, which is set for a summer 2021 release.
