The Boys creator and showrunner Eric Kripke talked about a small connection between season 3 and Supernatural. Having created both series, having Jensen Ackles be cast in season 3 of The Boys is a welcome return for them working together. Ackles starred as Dean Winchester in Supernatural and will be playing Soldier Boy in the upcoming season of the Amazon original series.

The adult-themed superhero series is based on the comic book by the same name. It follows a group of non-powered humans who band together to fight corrupt superpowered people. The second season included an arc involving white supremacist Stormfront (Aya Cash), who works with Homelander (Antony Starr) to take absolute control. The third season sees the inclusion of Soldier Boy, Gunpowder, Blue Hawk, and Supersonic.

In an interview with The Wrap, Kripke talked about the success of the Amazon series. With season 3 just around the corner, he explained what it was like working with Ackles once again after Supernatural ended in 2020. He talked about a small connection that he recognized on the first day of dailies, which includes a rundown hotel room reminiscent of the ones that Dean often frequented while on jobs in The CW show. However, he clarified that he wants the two characters to remain very separate, which is why they went out of their way to ensure that. See below for Kripke’s full comment on what it has been like working together again:

“It’s been awesome. I mean, I love the guy so much. And just to have him read my words again is such a treat. I mean, on the first day of dailies, I reached out to him. Funny enough, his very first scene as Soldier Boy was taking place in a s—-y motel room. And so he’s in this s—-y motel room reading my words. And I just was like, ‘This is great. This feels like coming home.’ It’s been awesome. The cast loved him. They saw immediately what a good dude and what a really fine actor he is. And really all of our conversations have been about how to make sure that this is not Dean Winchester. How do we give him a look that feels a little different and register of voice and mannerisms? I think he and I are both really interested in creating a different character. So it’s been a blast. I mean, he’s such a good actor. The metaphor I use is he just has a lot of Crayons in his Crayon box and you can really use all of them to do something, I think, really nuanced.”

It’s great to know that Ackles has settled into his role on set among his fellow cast so easily. While The Boys is inspired by a comic series, it doesn’t strictly follow the original story. Many of the characters are pretty different, and their journeys certainly vary. The comic also incorporates many sexual arcs that are either only hinted at in the show or removed entirely. It will be interesting to see how Soldier Boy is adapted into live-action, given the character’s interaction with Homelander in the comics. Regardless, Ackles seems like a good fit for the role.

This news comes off of The Boys earning 2 Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series for the episode titled “What I Know” by Rebecca Sonnenshine. It’s exciting to see what’s in store for season 3, especially since there will be some new faces in the cast. Ackles has been so closely tied to Supernatural for so many years that audiences will have to wait and see just how well he fits in with a new cast.
