Joey King is a sword-wielding royal in the first look image of The Princess. King is widely known for starring in Netflix’s The Kissing Booth trilogy. The 22-year-old former child star has also appeared in films including The Conjuring, Independence Day: Resurgence, and The Dark Knight Rises. In 2019, she received Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for her role in The Act, a crime drama limited series on Hulu.

The Princess is a Disney+ production through its recently acquired studio, 20th Century Fox. It is slated to stream on Hulu in 2022. The Princess is described as an action-adventure film set within a fairytale. It will be directed by Vietnamese director Le-Van Kiet who is known for his brutal action movies. John Wick producer Derek Kolstad joins the upcoming film’s pool of producers.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Disney (via 20th Century Studios Canada) has unveiled a first look image for The Princess during its inaugural Disney+ Day. The photo shows King looking every inch like a warrior princess ready for battle. Her short white dress is muddied and soiled as she holds a sword in one hand. Behind her are fallen mercenaries who she has defeated in order to protect her kingdom. Check out the image below:

While the movie’s plot is still under wraps, the first image teases a thrilling and empowering princess story that Disney is known for. In fact, King’s look is highly reminiscent of Merida in Brave, the 2012 Pixar animated film about a medieval Scottish princess who would rather shoot arrows than wear a tiara. Many other Disney films such as Mulan and Tangled were also built around female leads who are headstrong, passionate, and daring. This formula has clearly worked for countless Disney princess movies, from Cinderella to The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Frozen.

That said, The Princess does not look like the typical Disney renaissance movie. Based on its first official photo, the upcoming film teases to combine Disney’s fairytale magic with the ruthlessness of a legit action movie. Disney perfectly describes it as “John Wick meets Sleeping Beauty.” Viewers can expect an epic adventure that will pile on the kill count. King, who is fresh from the success of The Kissing Booth, seems the perfect choice to star in the lead roleShe exudes beauty and defiance like a princess version of Joan of Arc. With all these elements, The Princess promises to give its young audiences one thrilling cinematic adventure.
