John Cho, star of the Harold & Kumar film series, says that he’s unsure about whether a fourth instalment will be made. The original Harold & Kumar trilogy, which was created by Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (Cobra Kai, American Reunion), kicked off with 2004’s Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle. The comedy film was praised at the time of release and its success spawned two more sequels, 2008’s Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay and 2011’s A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas.

The films featured Cho, Kal Penn, and How I Met Your Mother‘s Neil Patrick Harris, playing a fictional, womanizing version of himself. The films are considered stoner buddy-comedies, with surreal and animated elements included in the later sequels. The story of the films revolve around the adventures of Harold Lee (Cho) and Kumar Patel (Penn) and explore their contrasting ideas on love, maturity, and life.

While answering fan questions on social media platforms for GQ, Cho was asked about whether there was a Harold & Kumar 4 in development. He mentions that while there were many different types of jokes and gags in the first three movies, he was unsure about “what the movie can do now.” He also states that he wouldn’t know “how to navigate” a possible sequel, and that even though the idea of a fourth film is being “given some thought,” it would be a “complicated endeavour.” Read his full quote below:

I gotta say, that this is a really stupid answer but we used to have a lot of political jokes and race jokes, and I don’t know what the movie can do now. I don’t know how to navigate that. We’re giving it some thought, but it is like a much more complicated endeavor than it was five years ago. But I’d like to. I really like everyone and I like the characters. Fingers crossed.

The first three films in the series received mixed to positive reviews from critics, with Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle regarded as a cult classic. The films were also hailed for the inclusion of a racially diverse cast, which was one of the first of its kind for a mainstream Hollywood film. The actors and writers from the original trilogy have voiced their interest in making Harold & Kumar 4, but there has been no official confirmation as to whether the project has gone ahead into the development stage. Given that writers Hurwitz and Schlossberg are busy working on Netflix’s Cobra Kai, coupled with Penn and Cho’s involvements in multiple other projects, it’s highly unlikely that audiences will get to see the comedic duo onscreen anytime soon.

Cho has gone on to become one of the most successful Hollywood stars over the last decade after working in major projects like the Star Trek franchise, the techno-thriller Searching, and most recently, the live-action adaptation of the iconic anime series Cowboy Bebop on Netflix. The actor’s tone regarding a potential Harold & Kumar 4 won’t inspire confidence in fans who have been clamoring for a new installment. But, the fact that Cho and the creative team behind the first three Harold & Kumar films are working on ideas for another sequel offers a ray of hope for another team-up between the charismatic duo.
