Discovery+ has announced a two-part documentary following the tumultuous relationship and divorce between Hollywood A-listers Johnny Depp and Amber Heard called Johnny vs. Amber. The couple first met on the set of The Rum Diary before getting married in 2015. However, Heard filed for divorce the following year, which kicked off an extensive and very public legal battle between the two. Both parties accused one another of domestic abuse, and both deny those allegations. While the pair reached a divorce settlement, with Depp paying heard $7 million, the legal battles are far from over.

Both Depp and Heard have received intense backlash from fans for various reasons. Depp was asked to leave his role in Fantastic Beasts 3 due to the public scandal, while some fans are calling for Heard to be fired from her role as Mera in next year’s Aquaman 2. Particularly, Heard said she would donate her $7 million divorce settlement to the ACLU, but Depp is pushing for Heard to reveal proof of whether or not the full donation was made.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Now, according to THR, Discovery+ is planning to release a documentary about the high-profile dissolution of the relationship. Titled Johnny vs. Amber, the two-episode series will dive into the breakdown of their marriage, and the subsequent public fallout that ensued. Showrunners will use both conflicting perspectives as their guide. One episode will portray Depp’s side of the story, that Heard was deceptive in their relationship, while the other will focus on Heard’s claims that she was a victim of Depp’s drug and alcohol-fueled abuse.

Johnny vs. Amber will feature testimonies from lawyers on both sides, interviews with people close to the couple, and video and audio footage taken by Heard and Depp. Discovery+ has not announced a release date for the series, but it will also likely cover the public’s reception to the divorce and calls for both actors to be ousted from Hollywood.

Depp’s career has seen a notable decline in recent years due to the messy divorce, while Warner Bros has supported Heard and doubled down in keeping her in the Aquaman franchise. The divorce led to many fans taking sides, calling for the other party to be “canceled” or forced out of mainstream stardom. It’s an interesting case that has been nothing short of a whirlwind, so an in-depth documentary might help bring more light to the two very different perspectives, with the truth lying somewhere in between.

Discovery+ will surely attract viewers to its platform with the high-profile documentary, but it will be interesting to see who is interviewed for Johnny vs. AmberBoth Heard and Depp likely aren’t too pleased with the series that will shed even more light on their volatile marriage and further shape public reception on both of their careers in Hollywood.
