Hirohiko Araki’s seminal manga hit Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure is enjoying mainstream western success at last. The recent Netflix run of Part 6 of the anime has proven to be a big hit for Netflix, and fans are eagerly awaiting more episodes. The show’s chronicles of the Joestar family are capturing western audiences like they have Japanese audiences for thirty-five years. Part of the reason for its popularity is the protagonist family of the Joestars.

Every part of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure focuses on a member of the Joestar family. Member Jotaro Kujo says in Part 6 that the family has an uncanny ability to motivate people. There’s a quality about them that draws people to them. And each Joestar has quotes that show how charismatic they are.

8 Jonathan Joestar

“Dio, as you have said, our fates are intertwined. I feel an odd warmth for you.”

This quote is actually the famous last words of the first Jojo of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. Jonathan was characterized by his noble spirit. He was of noble birth, and had his birthright stolen by the “lower class” invader Dio Brando. But despite this, Jonathan is always polite and loving towards everything.

In his death, Jonathan is surrounded by a burning ship, cradling his murderer Dio in his arms. Even then, he still shows love to the man that had once been his brother. The quote continues, and he comments on how their lives are intertwined. Jonathan still loved everyone, showing love for his enemy after saving the ones he loved and passing away.

7 Joseph Joestar

“I planned every detail! I stacked the whole deck! (That’s a lie, but it’ll drive him nuts.)”

Jonathan wasn’t an idiot, but he was more characterized by his brute strength in combat than his smarts. His grandson Joseph, though, was an incredibly clever fighter who preferred to trick his opponents. A far cry from Jonathan’s nobility, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 2 protagonist Joseph would often cheat in battle, and hated the idea of hard work. And this quote from the final battle of Part 2 shows it off well.

At this point in the show, Joseph’s enemies have grown wise to his trickery; they expect foul play. So when the main villain is being defeated by a fluke accident, he immediately asks Joseph if this was his plan. Joseph doesn’t miss a beat here; he immediately takes credit for the accident, coyly thinking about how much it’ll annoy the villain. Joseph may love his family, but his mischievous side would always define him, even as an old man.

6 Jotaro Kujo

“Look, no one ever said Jotaro Kujo was a nice guy…”

This quote from Joseph’s grandson is the beginning of a longer monologue. It’s a famous monologue where Jotaro delivers a speech about what a tough punk he is. He mentions how he beats people up on the regular and is frequently rude. He describes himself as a menace to polite society, and the delinquent his mother is worried he is.

But even then he condemns the villain (in this case a brainwashed Noriaki Kakyoin) for using his stand to attack normal people. He says the praying on people who cannot see the stand is cowardly. In absence of a judge, he says he will judge Kakyoin as evil himself. This shows that while Jotaro is tough, he still has moral fortitude. This monologue has gone on to become iconic.

5 Josuke Higashikata

“What did you say about my hair!?”

Josuke Higashikata is perhaps the most normal Jojo up to this point. Unlike the previous Jojos, he has no grand monologues or poetic speeches. The events of Part 4 are actually quite comedic a lot of the time. So Josuke’s most character-defining quote actually sounds like a sitcom catchphrase.

Josuke’s hair is very important to him, as it represents the man who saved his life. He’s a very sentimental person, and insulting his hair is like insulting his savior. This connection shows what a truly kind person he is, as he literally wears his gratitude to this stranger on his body. This is ironic, as this catchphrase is usually only said when he gets mad. To be fair, his hair and look is quite iconic, featuring in Jojo’s cosplay.

4 Giorno Giovanna

“So an act of disrespect is justification for murder in your book? I see now.”

Giorno Giovanna’s quest is about infiltrating the mafia. While rather more comfortable with murder than the previous protagonist, he continues to have high moral standards. But while joining the mafia early on, the actions of the capo Polpo end up causing a bystander to die. Polpo is intending to teach Giorno lessons about being a mafioso, but Giorno takes this lesson and turns it on him.

Giorno says that Polpo disrespected that bystander with his stand ability, so Giorno now has free reign to kill him. Of course this isn’t just a cold speech delivered for dramatic effect. This is Jojo, so there is a strange turn in this grim thought from Giorno. Giorno turns Polpo’s gun into a banana with his confusing and bizarre Jojo stand ability, which fires as he attempts to eat it.

3 Jolyne Cujoh

“You said everything has a name? I’ll name this power too. Stone Free, the power to escape this Stone Ocean.”

Jolyne Cujoh is one of the most unique Jojos in the series, and not just because of her gender. She’s rather more of a hedonist than the other Jojos. But rather than picking one of her many lascivious quotes, this one is about her determination. In her first battle in the part, she decides to name her stand in honor of her desire to escape prison.

While the musical reference is removed in Netflix’s official version, the name of the part is retained. The title drop of Stone Ocean; an impenetrable wall that she must overcome. But the reveal of her stand’s title assures us as audiences that there’s no way she won’t make it there. This shows audiences that she’s just as tough as any of the Joestars before her.

2 Johnny Joestar

“This is the story of me starting to walk. Not in the physical sense, but in an adolescence to adulthood kind of way.”

As these portions of the manga are not yet animated, spoilers will be present but kept at a minimum. Johnny Joestar, Jojo of Part 7, is perhaps the least heroic Jojo. He’s unpleasant and pathetic when we meet him, and only joins the plot for selfish reasons. But he also is perhaps the most elaborate case of character development in the franchise.

Johnny’s line here bookends the story, showcasing its themes. Paired with his actions during the story, this monologue creates a full picture of his character. It’s his evolution as a person, going from self-loathing to self-sufficient. Johnny is one of the most complex and well-developed characters in the story, finally walking on his own and gaining one of the most powerful stand abilities in Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure.

1 Jousuke Higashikata

“But those are all activities for those who know their places to return to. Where do I go? Where should I go back to? I don’t know.”

The most recent Jojo is a bizarre figure indeed, being almost completely amnesiac when the part begins, He shares a name with Part 4’s Jojo, but spelled differently. He’s got several personality quirks and bizarre qualities that just make him hard to pin down. But as the quote shows, this weighs on him as well.

Jousuke (nicknamed “Gappy” by fans) is talking about other people. He’s jealous of other people’s lives and their belonging. He has no place to belong due to his amnesia, and frequently comments on this fact. Despite his eccentricities, he’s actually a fairly melancholic character, and this quote really sums that aspect of him up as a Jojo.
