Warning! Spoilers for Superman: Son of Kal-El #5

While Jon Kent takes on his father’s mantle as Superman, he’s teaming up with Wally West as the Flash. With the two next generation heroes crossing paths multiple times, they are shaping up to be a new World’s Finest.

The DC Universe is expanding as new characters step into the shoes of iconic superheroes. From Tim Fox’s Batman to Jon Kent’s Superman, there are a wide variety of changes coming, following the events of Future State. Although Superman: Son of Kal-El #5 recently made headlines for the titular hero’s sexuality, there is another relationship which might play an integral part in his time as Superman. It turns out that Jon has become the next Man of Steel at a convenient point in the DC Universe, as Wally West has similarly taken on his uncle Barry Allen’s alter ego as the Flash. The issue written by Tom Taylor with art by John Timms showcases the duo’s friendship.

In a preview released by DC Comics for Superman: Son of Kal-El #5, Jon’s Superman drops by Central City for a quick visit with Wally’s Flash. This isn’t the first time they’ve crossed paths, as they previously bonded over their shared super speed, and all the implications of the ability. When Jon is in need of assistance as he deals with a major threat, the new Flash is the first person who comes to mind. Jon had been raised around many other A-list heroes who are a part of the Justice League, so his decision to be friends with Wally’s Flash in particular feels special. The duo of second generation heroes could turn out to be DC’s next World’s Finest.

When Jon was a kid, it seemed like any likely team-up in his future that resembled the World’s Finest would involve Damian Wayne. There is still potential for Jon to reunite with his childhood superhero alley, but it could be a while until Damian becomes the next Dark Knight. For now, Jon is joining forces with Wally, who has had a lot of experience by this point in learning to fill his uncle’s position. Although Damian was always a friend to Jon, the new Superman requires some mentorship and support from a professional.

Before taking on the mantle, Jon had turned to his dad in times of need. Without him around, he is constantly left to his own devices, taking on solo missions and earning his new name in the process. As the DC Universe enters a new age, Superman and the Flash are becoming worthy inheritors of the title, World’s Finest.
