Though his name may be somewhat new in Hollywood, Jonathan Majors is quickly being recognized as a huge talent. In both movies and television shows, Majors has been a captivating presence in any project no matter the size of his role.

He has stood out in large ensembles, played powerful leading roles in critically acclaimed projects, and has even started drifting towards the world of comic book stories. His career is just getting going and he surely has more exciting roles in his future, but now feels like a good time to look back on the best work of Jonathan Majors this far.

10 Do Not Disturb (2011) – 5.1

Majors made his movie acting debut in this small independent project that didn’t get much attention. Do Not Disturb is told in five separate stories from five different filmmakers all about what happens on various nights inside the same hotel room.

Though it was his first movie, Majors is now the most recognizable face in the ensemble, and seeing his early role is probably the main reason to check out this low-budget movie. While it wasn’t exactly an attention-grabbing debut for Majors, things would only get better from there.

9 Captive State (2019) – 6.0

The sci-fi thriller Captive State is a very interesting idea for a project that unfortunately most people thought wasted its good idea. The movie is set in Chicago many years after an alien force has occupied the city. It follows various people on both sides of the occupation; those living as captors and those who are collaborators.

Majors plays the leader of the resistance and he is joined by other great actors like Vera Farmiga and John Goodman. While there are some interesting concepts at play, Captive State was largely overlooked.

8 Jungleland (2019) – 6.2

While Majors will soon be joining Creed III opposite Michael B. Jordan, that will not be his first boxing movie. Jungleland found Majors operating outside the ring in this intense drama. Jack O’Connell plays an amateur boxer who is coached by his eager brother (Charlie Hunnam). They soon find themselves fighting for their lives after getting in deep with a criminal (Majors).

While Jungleland will likely not go down as one of the great boxing movies ever made, it is a solid drama. Majors is a stand-out in the talented cast as the villain with a charismatic flair.

7 White Boy Rick (2018) – 6.5

Based on the incredible true story of the youngest FBI informant in history, White Boy Rick is a wild crime drama. It follows a teenager named Rick who lives in Detroit in the 1980s who soon finds himself in the midst of the city’s rampant drug trade.

Majors once again brings a lot to what could have been another cliché villain role. The movie is enough to hold the audience’s attention with its fun and exciting story and some good performances, including an underrated role for Matthew McConaughey as Rick’s father.

6 Da 5 Bloods (2020) – 6.5

Majors teamed with legendary filmmaker Spike Lee and a talented cast for Da 5 Bloods. The movie tells the story of a group of friends who return to Vietnam decades after fighting in the war in order to locate the body of their fallen comrade as well as the gold they buried there. Majors plays the son of one of the men who comes on the trip.

The film was praised for offering a new perspective on the typical Vietnam War movie as well as its acting, especially a commanding performance from Delroy Lindo. It is also notable as one of Chadwick Boseman’s final roles.

5 When We Rise (2017) – 7.1

With stars like Guy Pearce, Whoopi Goldberg, and Michael K. Williams, When We Rise was a powerful television miniseries about the fight for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community. Spanning several decades, the series takes a look at various stories inspired by real people and events.

4 Lovecraft Country (2020) – 7.1

Majors scored his first big leading role on television in the critically acclaimed horror series Lovecraft Country. The show was a unique combination of the works of horror writer H.P. Lovecraft and the history of racism in America. Majors plays a man traveling across the country in the 1950s searching for his missing father and encountering horrors along the way.

The movie was a big hit with many recent Emmy nominations despite its cancellation, with Majors scoring a nomination himself. The mix of horror and intense subject matter proved to be a compelling combination for many fans.

3 Hostiles (2017) – 7.2

Hostiles is a movie that seemed to fly under the radar when it was released, despite an amazing cast and considerable acclaim. Set in 1892, Christian Bale plays an Army Captain who is assigned to escort a Cheyenne chief and his family across dangerous territory.

Majors appears alongside great actors like Jesse Plemons and Timothée Chalamet as Bale’s soldiers accompanying him on the mission. It is a violent and brutal Western that still manages to deliver a thought-provoking story.

2 The Last Black Man in San Francisco (2019) – 7.3

The small indie drama The Last Black Man in San Francisco was likely the movie that served as Majors’s big break. Though a small project, it received plenty of acclaim and was dubbed one of the best movies of its year.

Majors stars alongside Jimmie Fails as two young men who have lived in San Francisco their whole lives but are gradually finding they no longer have a place in the changing city. It is a powerful, beautiful, and fascinating story about loving a city that gives no love back.

1 Loki (2021) – 8.6

Marvel fans are talking a lot about Jonathan Majors right now and it is all thanks to his appearance in the finale episode of Loki. The time-tripping MCU adventure concluded Loki’s journey to the truth of the TVA by introducing He Who Remains (Majors) an extremely powerful and complex Marvel figure.

The show itself is one of the most ambitious MCU projects to date that explores Loki in interesting ways and introduces some great new characters. Majors’s role may be brief by he gives a fantastic performance and promises to play a huge role in the future of the MCU.
