Joshua Jackson isn’t interested in doing a Dawson’s Creek reunion special. The beloved WB teen drama premiered in 1998 and ran for six seasons until 2003. It followed the lives of a group of teenagers as they navigated friendship, romance, and growing up in the fictional town of Capeside, Massachusetts. Jackson starred alongside then up-and-coming young stars James Van Der Beek, Katie Holmes, and Michelle Williams. He played the smart but conflicted teen Pacey Witter who falls in love with Joey (Holmes), the same girl his best friend Dawson (Van Der Beek) had a crush on. The love triangle was a recurring storyline throughout all six seasons until the series finale, which showed Joey and Pacey renewing their relationship.

Dawson’s Creek became an instant hit among young audiences worldwide, performing solidly in ratings every week. Viewers praised the show for its coming-of-age plot that dealt with social issues teenagers commonly struggle with. Recently, the 90s classic enjoyed a resurgence when all its seasons dropped on Netflix in late 2020. More than 20 years since Dawson’s Creek debuted, fans who grew up with the show have been clamoring for a cast reunion, similar to the Friends reunion special which aired on HBO last May.

Amid talks about a highly anticipated Dawson’s Creek revival, Jackson was quick to shut down the idea of doing a Friends-style reunion. In a recent interview with The Guardian, the 43-year-old actor expressed his hesitation about reuniting with his co-stars given their ages today. According to Jackson, it’s different for the Friends actors because people knew them as adults when the sitcom aired. He explained that Dawson’s Creek fans may be shocked and disappointed to see that their beloved characters aren’t the same adorable teenagers they followed before. Read Jackson’s comments below:

“I think because the Friends cast were already adults when they were doing the show, it’s less jarring to see them now. If you put our mid-40s selves together on a couch now, with our creaking backs, it might shock people. Nobody needs to hear Pacey grunting when he gets out of a chair.”

Despite Jackson’s apprehension, it is clear that Dawson’s Creek launched its lead stars into stardom. Now in their 40s, all of the actors have led thriving careers in the industry since appearing in the teen drama. Jackson himself has starred in a number of films and series, and even explored theater. While a potential Dawson’s Creek reunion has always been discussed over the years, the closest one that fans got was back in 2018 when its main cast got together for a special photo shoot via Entertainment Weekly to celebrate the show’s 20th anniversary.

On the heels of popular shows from the 90s and the early 2000s being revived in some way, it is natural for fans to expect the same for the classic teen drama. Much like the Friends special, a Dawson’s Creek reunion could reveal what Dawson, Joey, Pacey, and the rest of the characters are doing now as middle-aged adults. The actors and showrunners could also reveal interesting behind-the-scenes trivia about the series. Of course, the much-awaited project will depend on its stars’ participation. Given Jackson’s lack of enthusiasm, it may take a while before they see their favorite Dawson’s Creek actors back on screen.
