The Jurassic World: Dominion trailer teases the trilogy’s ending, and it indicates the next movie in the franchise will ditch the Jurassic title. Universal relaunched the Jurassic franchise in 2015 with Jurassic World, and the series led by Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard is already reaching its conclusion. Jurassic World: Dominion will wrap up the current storyline in an exciting fashion, with dinosaurs roaming free across Earth and original cast members returning.

Although Jurassic World 3 is the end of the current trilogy, there have already been indications that the successful movie franchise will continue. Producers have said that more movies are likely to be made afterward. This is hardly surprising considering how well the Jurassic World franchise has performed at the box office. The first Jurassic World is still the seventh biggest movie of all-time and shattered box office records in 2015. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom followed up the $1.6 billion earner by making another $1.3B. Jurassic World: Dominion is expected to be another huge box office hit this summer.

As long as Jurassic World: Dominion is a big hit, Universal will continue making movies in the franchise. However, there is now an indication that a very different title could be attached to the next installment. Jurassic World: Dominion‘s trailer promises the film is “the end of the Jurassic era.” There are a few different ways this marketing statement can be interpreted, but the most meaningful is the idea that the seventh movie in this franchise won’t use “Jurassic” in its title. Universal and the franchise producers might already have plans to make more movies but without clinging to the Jurassic title structure the previous six movies have used.

The idea of the Jurassic franchise continuing without being identified as a Jurassic Park/World movie would mark a huge change for Universal’s series. It would mean the studio is willing to abandon the recognizable part of the franchise’s title to go in a new direction. While Jurassic World: Dominion could be using the phrase as a marketing ploy to hype up the new movie as “the end,” it would make sense for this to be the final Jurassic movie. Not only is it wrapping up the current trilogy, but the original Jurassic Park stars are coming back too. Having both eras of the Jurassic franchise collide means there is no better time for the franchise to wrap up the “Jurassic era.”

If Universal does leave the Jurassic title behind for future installments in the franchise, it will be fascinating to see what becomes the new title instead. The franchise has so far used the Jurassic period of the geologic time scale as a reference for its name, so it would make sense to then move forward to the Cretaceous period. This could mean a Cretaceous Park reboot could be on the horizon. It would also link the new movies to Netflix’s animated show Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous in a way. Universal could also look to go back in time for the next dinosaur story and use the Triassic name as a nod to that. In any case, it appears Jurassic World: Dominion could be the last film in the franchise to use the Jurassic title.
