[Potential SPOILERS for Justice League ahead.]

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, for all its mixed results, marked the beginning of the DC Extended Universe. Contained within its extended run time are the seeds from which Wonder WomanAquaman, and a number of other DC superhero solo films will sprout from. Batman V Superman also held clues to the type of trouble Earth is in for during the grand-scale Justice League film event.

Recently, rumors surfaced that the main villain, at least in director Zack Snyder’s Justice League Part One, will be Apokolips’ very own military leader Steppenwolf. Furthermore, it sounds like Darkseid will make an appearance at the end of the film. A new lead suggests the big bad may also open the first Justice League movie.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

According to Heroic Hollywood’s sources, Darkseid could see action at the beginning of the first Justice League, as a flashback. Although they cautioned that the script is being altered daily, rumor has it the deleted “Communion” scene from Batman V Superman is the biggest hint as to the villainous premise of the two-parter. In the deleted scene, Lex Luthor uncovers three motherboxes which will supposedly inform the overarching conflict which ribbons between the DCEU solo films and the two-part Justice League epic. The vision he has – of a gnarly alien presence with the motherboxes – could represent the DCEU’s version of Steppenwolf.

Here comes the possible spoiler. If HH’s sources are correct, then Justice League Part One will jump back to a major conflict that sets-up the superhero assemblage and ties into several other films. Roughly 30,000 years ago, Darkseid attacked the planet Earth. A coalition made up of humans, Amazonians, and Atlanteans managed to fend off the cosmic psycho. Fleeing the planet, he leaves the motherboxes behind, prompting Steppenwolf to retrieve them – and, in turn, launching the massive Justice League two-parter storyline.

If this is true, then Steppenwolf will likely be the prelude to the havoc Darkseid will wreak in the second part of Justice League. The presence of a flashback would be an effective way to establish the events which cause Steppenwolf’s return – either to reclaim his prized devices or simply clean up after his nephew’s mess. If so, his nephew may be compelled to enter the fray in order to in aid his uncle, meddle with his plans, or merely seek revenge on the earthlings who defeated him all those millennia ago.

Of course, as stated, the script is reportedly in a constant state of flux. The plot-lines of today may be nothing more than the footnotes of tomorrow. But if the buzz about Steppenwolf is true, we could see a unified front of Apokaliptic proportions assaulting the Earth. Here’s hoping the rumors are true, because that could make for one heck of a Justice League event onscreen.
