The release date for Zack Snyder’s Justice League, aka the Snyder Cut, has been announced, but fails to capitalize on a Batman V Superman opportunity. After literally years of constant, ravenous demand from fans, the Snyder Cut is finally on its way. For a long time, many doubted whether Snyder’s original vision for Justice League would ever see the light of day, and while the Snyder Cut won’t be exactly what was originally planned, it will be much, much closer to realizing it.

Snyder has even gotten the freedom to add elements to his version of Justice League, including scenes featuring Jared Leto’s Joker. It’s a truly grand project, designed to be a subscription-seller for the HBO Max streaming service, which will serve as its exclusive home, at least initially. Whether everyone who demanded the Snyder Cut will actually subscribe to HBO Max to see it remains anyone’s guess, but they’re definitely being given a chance to put their money where their virtual mouth was.

As recently revealed, Zack Snyder’s Justice League will debut on HBO Max on March 18, 2021. That’s right around the corner, and gives DC fans something major to look forward to in the first quarter of the year. However, the chosen date came very close to commemorating a major DCEU milestone.

Justice League Snyder Cut Release Date Misses A BvS Opportunity

While there’s nothing wrong with the March 18, 2021 release date assigned to Zack Snyder’s Justice League – and with Godzilla vs. Kong‘s recent move to March 31, it now has some breathing room – Warner Bros. missed a big opportunity by not waiting a little. Just one week later, March 25, would’ve had the Snyder Cut release on exactly the fifth anniversary of when Batman V Superman opened in theaters in 2016. Batman V Superman, also directed by Snyder, was the film that kicked the DCEU off in earnest, and was supposed to only be the early stages of the director/producer’s long-term plans for the brand.

Of course, Snyder eventually left the DCEU in messy fashion, leading Joss Whedon to come in and fashion his own version of Justice League for Warner Bros., a version most fans didn’t care for. For Snyder fans, releasing his Justice League on the anniversary of Batman V Superman could’ve been an excellent way to celebrate his DC legacy, even if this will be the end of it.

At the same time though, one can understand why Warner Bros. may have wanted to avoid that comparison. After all, for as many fans as Snyder has, one can’t forget that Batman V Superman was a highly divisive film upon release. Tying the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League to the spotty reputation of Batman V Superman may not have been a wise move in the long run.
