Justice League Steppenwolf Actor Hasn’t Seen The Snyder Cut

Ciarán Hinds, the actor who plays Steppenwolf in Justice League, reveals he hasn’t seen the Snyder Cut of the film. When Justice League was released in 2017, many fans denounced the project for its apparent departure from Snyder’s original vision. Partway through production on the film, Snyder had to step away due to the death of his daughter and Avengers director Joss Whedon stepped in to replace him. Whedon filmed additional scenes and oversaw the film’s post-production, drastically altering what Snyder had originally planned.

A call to #ReleaseTheSnyderCut rallied fans from around the world and Warner Bros. eventually agreed to give Snyder around $70 million to finish his own director’s cut of the film. The four-hour epic was released on HBO Max and saw significant changes to most of the film’s visual effects, including a complete redesign of the central villain, Steppenwolf, and the inclusion of previously-removed storylines. The Snyder Cut also featured an R-rating due to some upgraded violence and a few F-bombs.

According to a new interview with ComicBook.com, Hinds reveals that he still hasn’t actually seen the Snyder Cut yet. Just because he hasn’t seen it, however, doesn’t mean it’s not his preferred version of the film. As Hinds explains, Snyder’s version includes many new scenes that are needed to understand the greater story that Snyder is trying to tell. “I can’t be honest to this because I haven’t seen Zack’s version, but I should imagine Zack’s version by far because that is the story that he meant, that’s the one he planned for. He meant to have all that tangential stuff moving in so that you could understand the movement. So, when it was cut to a very short film overall, it didn’t, a lot of it didn’t make sense, but I believe I’ve heard that the people who saw Zack’s version enjoyed it a lot.”

It’s not entirely surprising that Hinds hasn’t seen the Snyder Cut. He is a busy actor, after all, starring 2021’s Belfast, so sitting down to watch a four-hour superhero film that he acted in probably isn’t at the top of his list of things to do. It’s also not unusual for actors to not feel comfortable watching their own movies. Even though he hasn’t seen it, though, he makes very clear that Snyder’s version is the one he prefers and that he’s aware that it is the version that’s generally preferred among superhero fans.

While Steppenwolf as a villain was rather underwhelming in the original cut of Justice League, the character is vastly improved in Snyder’s version, at least visually. The success of the Snyder Cut has also led to further calls to #RestoreTheSnyderverse, with fans demanding Snyder be allowed to complete the two Justice League sequels he had planned as well as the Ben Affleck solo Batman movie. While it’s unlikely that Snyder will ever get to actually revisit his planned universe of DC films, it certainly sounds like Hinds supports the director and the original vision he had for Justice League (even if he hasn’t actually watched it).
