An English-language adaptation of the hit Korean drama Crash Landing on You is reportedly in the works. Crash Landing on You initially released in December of 2019 and was immediately met with worldwide acclaim. The show aired simultaneously on the South Korean broadcast station tvN and as a Netflix exclusive for international audiences. Prior to the meteoric success of Squid Game, Crash Landing on You was among the most popular South Korean shows from the streamer, topping the most-watched categories of several countries.

Crash Landing on You follows a wealthy South Korean heiress named Yoon Se-ri (Son Ye-jin) who accidentally crash lands in North Korea following a freak paragliding incident. There, she meets a North Korean soldier named Captain Ri Jeong-hyeok (Hyun Bin), with whom she falls in love over the course of the series. The drama, which spends the majority of its runtime developing the budding romance between Se-ri and Jeong-hyeok, generated controversy over its depictions of North Korea. Some North Korean defectors praised the show for its commitment to authentically portraying day-to-day life in the country, while others lambasted it for romanticizing the lives of the North Korean elite.

A recent report from Yonhap News Agency confirms that an English-language adaptation of Crash Landing on You is currently in development. Studio Dragon, the production studio behind the original series, is set to co-develop along with Netflix. A release window for the adaptation has yet to be confirmed by the studio at the time of writing.

Yonhap’s article also reaffirms earlier reports of planned English-language adaptations for other popular K-dramas, such as 2019’s Hotel del Luna and 2016’s W: Two Worlds Apart. Ever since Squid Game broke longstanding viewership records earlier this year, South Korean intellectual properties have been in high demand. International audiences can expect to see an influx of English adaptations of Korean programs in the coming years as studios attempt to ride the lingering coattails of Netflix’s success.

As for Crash Landing on You, it remains to be seen just how the studio will translate the original show’s premise into a context that English-speakers can relate to. Arguably the most important aspect of the series is the geopolitical tension that serves as the backdrop for Se-ri and Jeong-hyeok’s romance. Reunification of the Korean peninsula remains a hot-button issue to this day – one that can’t be boiled down to a simplistic “support/oppose” dichotomy, which the show tangentially acknowledges throughout its 16 episodes. Hopefully, Studio Dragon’s English adaptation of Crash Landing on You will be able to thread the needle as tastefully as its source material in terms of sensitively portraying delicate current events onscreen.
