Dr. McCoy actor Karl Urban addresses news that Star Trek 4 is going ahead at Paramount and discusses his possible return. It seemed a fourth movie set in J.J. Abrams’ Kelvin timeline might never happen, until news emerged last month saying Paramount is actually moving forward with Star Trek 4.

This Star Trek 4 news indeed caught everyone by surprise, including the Star Trek cast, who claim they knew nothing about the studio’s plans to put a fourth film into production. For his part, Captain Kirk actor Chris Pine recently said he’s excited to make another Star Trek movie if it indeed happens, but indicated he hasn’t yet seen a script. Uhura actress Zoe Saldana also chimed in on possible Star Trek 4 plans, saying it would be bittersweet to make another movie without the presence of Chekov actor Anton Yelchin, who sadly passed away in 2016.

Now another Star Trek cast member has given their thoughts about the possibility of the Starship Enterprise being removed from mothballs and sent out on a new big-screen mission to the final frontier. Speaking to Variety as part of their coverage of The Boys, Bones McCoy actor Urban indicated he also is in the dark about specific plans for the movie but is ready to get back into space if-and-when Star Trek 4 ever happens. “I haven’t seen a script, I know nothing,” he said, adding, “But I would love to work with those guys again, so much fun, the best hang. We’ll see.”

Star Trek was of course a dormant movie franchise when in 2009 Abrams rebooted things with the original Enterprise crew now played by a new cast, introducing his so-called Kelvin timeline along the way. Two more Kelvin timeline movies followed in Star Trek: Into Darkness and Star Trek: Beyond before the franchise again seemed to hit a wall. Bizarrely, Quentin Tarantino’s name then entered the conversation as the famed writer-director pitched an idea to Abrams that ended up being worked into a script by The Revenant screenwriter Mark L. Smith. Various other Star Trek projects were also reported to be in the works over the years, including one to be helmed by S.J. Clarkson and another from Fargo TV show creator Noah Hawley. Then last year it was reported that WandaVision director Matt Shakman has been tapped to direct Star Trek 4.

Indeed development of Star Trek 4 has proven to be an adventure almost as epic as any story ever featured in a Star Trek film. But now it seems things really are moving forward, though clearly none of the cast members have seen a script yet. Obviously a lot could still happen to scuttle this latest effort at getting Star Trek 4 out of spacedock but the news seems brighter than it has in many years. The best news of course is that all the cast members appear to be game to return, so now it’s seemingly a matter of working out the details.
