Kate Winslet discusses the potential storylines in Mare of Easttown season 2. Winslet portrayed the lead character in the HBO limited series, which premiered back in May, starring as Mare Sheehan – a small-town detective who tries to keep her life from falling apart while also investigating the murder of a local teenage girl. The murder mystery, from writer Brad Ingelsby and director Craig Zobel, gradually gained traction during its seven-episode run, building up its audience with the help of a compelling story and overwhelmingly positive reviews.

The show’s impact extended into awards season, as Mare of Easttown has been nominated at major award ceremonies. The limited series has also won big, with Winslet winning in the Lead Actress in a Limited Series category. Due to the popularity of the murder mystery, and the fact that many limited dramas end up returning for new episodes, fans have wondered if Mare of Easttown will be back for season 2. The lead star has said she would love to return as Mare, adding the caveat that it would depend on whether the story was worthwhile. In new remarks, Winslet reveals her thoughts on what that story could be.

During an interview with The Guardian, the Oscar-winning actress reiterated that she wasn’t sure about Mare of Easttown’s future. Still, Winslet made clear that if there was a second outing for the HBO drama, it would have to thoroughly address the police atrocities that are all too infuriatingly common in the U.S. and the U.K. “You can’t pretend these things haven’t happened,” Winslet stressed. Her quote is included below.

“I don’t know if I’m going to be playing Mare again. But if we were to do a second season, then for sure these atrocities which have existed in the police force here and in America will find their way into the stories we tell. One hundred per cent. You can’t pretend these things haven’t happened.”

Mare of Easttown, in a side story, does address the issue of police misconduct. In order to keep custody of her grandson, Mare plants drugs on the biological mother who is a recovering addict. It’s a truly terrible act, and one with real-life echoes, but it’s mostly used as a way to illustrate how far Winslet’s protagonist has fallen than to make any broad statement about the injustices perpetrated and perpetuated by law enforcement. Mare is essentially caught in the act and suspended. By the end of the limited series, in any case, Mare is viewed as a hero and all is forgiven.

It’s hard to fault Mare of Easttown too harshly for this, as the drama never set out to be a broad and systemic critique. It was far more about the emotional stakes that the characters face. But it does highlight the problem of attempting to criticize the police in a show where the police are ultimately the heroes that save the day. It’s a worthy challenge to take on, if Mare of Easttown season 2 does happen, though it would be fundamentally different from the type of series that fans initially enjoyed.
