Keanu Reeves jokes about possibly returning for Speed 3, referencing the prior unlikelihood of reprising Neo before The Matrix Resurrections. Reeves first starred in the action-thriller franchise with its 1994 debut centered on Los Angeles SWAT Officer Jack Traven as he learns of a mad bomber rigging a bus with an explosive set to detonate if it drops below 50 miles per hour. Traven gets on board the bus and engages in a high-speed race across Los Angeles with the passengers on board serving as hostages while trying to determine a way to defuse the bomb.

Alongside Reeves, the cast for Speed included Sandra Bullock, Dennis Hopper, Joe Morton, Jeff Daniels, Richard Lineback and Alan Ruck. Helmed by cinematographer Jan de Bont in his directorial debut, the film would go on to be a critical and commercial hit, grossing over $350 million against its estimated $37 million production budget and winning two Academy Awards for Best Sound Effects Editing and Best Sound. This success led to 20th Century Fox greenlighting a sequel, Speed 2: Cruise Control, with Bullock returning while Reeves would pass on the project that would infamously become one of the worst sequels ever made.

While speaking with Extra for the sci-fi action revival, Reeves opened up about the possibility of returning for Speed 3. After making a joke about having been absent for the 1997 sequel, the star said he could be open to the possibility and compared it to his return as Neo for The Matrix Resurrections. See what Reeves said below:

“I can’t say never, because I’m standing here for Matrix Resurrections and at the end of the trilogy I did die, so you can’t say never.”

Though Reeves’ decision to pass on Speed 2 in the time of its development came as a surprise to many, his thoughts on finding the script underwhelming was ultimately proven true when the sequel debuted to abysmal reviews and bombing at the box office with only $164 million grossed against its reported $160 million budget. Given this failure, it’s understandable studios and audiences have largely put the idea of a threequel to rest, though with the original Speed still ranking on Reeves’ best movies lists, there is still the occasional chatter of it being revisited. De Bont himself addressed the possibility of Speed 3 in 2020, stating that it could get off the ground if the original stars were available and a good story could be worked out.

The idea of Speed 3 getting made comes at the time in which Reeves is enjoying a wave of renewed popularity with audiences thanks to the John Wick franchise. The action franchise’s success has since led to him revisiting fellow fan-favorite franchise Bill & Ted and The Matrix, both of which have enjoyed generally positive reviews from critics and led to many hopeful for them to continue on. While audiences await to hear more of a potential Speed 3 or Reeves’ long-desired Constantine 2, they can catch up with The Matrix Resurrections in theaters and on HBO Max now.
