Marvel president Kevin Feige revealed a rough estimate for when Avengers 5 could release in theaters. What began as one of the biggest gambles in Hollywood in history is now one of the most successful film franchises of all time, thanks in large part to Feige’s guiding hand. No one imagined what the MCU could become when, in 2012, Captain American, Black Widow, Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, and Hawkeye faced off against Tom Hiddleston’s Loki in the Battle of New York. Since then, three more Avengers movies have been released and now Marvel is about to release its landmark 25th film with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

As the studio moves deeper into its Phase 4 slate, the future of the MCU is beginning to take shape and it’s grander than ever. Marvel has released four streaming shows (with many more on the way), all of which will tie into the studio’s theatrical releases. Dated through early 2023, nine Marvel movies are slated for release, including next month’s Shang-Chi, but news of a fifth Avengers movie has been slim. Avengers: Endgame was the end of an era for the franchise as the film said goodbye to many of its founding heroes, including Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, and Chris Evans’ Captain America, but as a new slate of heroes steps into the spotlight, audiences are wondering just when the next epic superhero team-up could be released.

Speaking to Collider, Feige revealed that “a new saga” is starting to take shape as Marvel continues to flesh out its new slate of heroes and lay the foundation for plots that will come to fruition over the next several years. Ultimately, the mega-producer says that he (and the studio) wants there to be decent amount of time between Endgame and the next major team-up, but Feige did not give an estimated amount of time. Check out his full thoughts below:

I think we want there to be a reasonable amount of time from the Endgame to start a new saga, which is already underway and already started. And then you need time, as you did in Phase 1, to build that saga before you start bringing everyone together.

There was only four years between Iron Man and the original Avengers movie in 2012. It was then three years until Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015 and three years before Infinity War and Endgame released back-to-back in 2018 and 2019, respectively. Still, it seems like there may be more than a four year gap between Endgame and Avengers 5 for a few different reasons. The first, and most obvious, is that Marvel’s slate is growing exponentially in the coming years. The studio is introducing new heroes at a rapid rate and it shows no sign of slowing down, with Blade, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men set to be introduced on the theatrical side of things.

An even larger list of characters is expected to be introduced in Marvel’s streaming series – Kate Bishop, Echo, Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, Moon Knight, and Ironheart will all own debut in their own series and will presumably cross over into the movies at some point. What this means for Avengers 5 is unclear, especially with rumors of a Young Avengers team-up also happening. With various heroes also teaming up in Marvel’s theatrical releases, it seems there are plenty of Avengers-sized movies on the way, even without the official moniker. It’s safe to say that an Avengers 5 will look unlike anything the MCU has brought to the table before and it may be a long way off as the franchise reaches greater and greater heights in the coming years.
