Warning! Spoilers for King in Black #3 below!

The King in Black event at Marvel Comics has seen the God of Symbiotes take on Marvel’s most powerful heroes and do considerable damage against both them and their home. Knull has successfully enveloped the Earth in darkness with few characters able to challenge him. So far, one of the biggest questions of the event has been, where’s Thor? In King of Black #3, the God of Thunder has returned to fight Knull head-on.

Knull has brought his dark army to Earth, leaving everyone from the Avengers to the Thunderbolts struggling to keep up with his chaos and destruction. The King in Black has infected numerous heroes into his own symbiote soldiers, leading other’s like Iron Man to get creative to fight back. Throughout the event, Thor, one of the strongest heroes who’s dealt with Knull’s powers (sort of) before, has been missing – as he’s been trapped by Donald Blake in a realm made by Odin. However, he makes a surprise return in the latest issue of the ongoing event series.

In King in Black #3 by Donny Cates, Ryan Stegman, Frank Martin, JP Mayer, and VC’s Clayton Cowles, Thor strikes Knull with lightning as he’s about to go after Dylan Brock, who’s powers are key to defeating the villain. The two fight through an army of infected heroes before Knull arrives on the scene. Thor and the King in Black exchange mammoth blows, with the God of Thunder knocking out his opponent’s jaw by swinging Mjolnir. Knull is unperturbed, as he summons All-Black the Necrosword and stabs Thor through the chest.

The King in Black taunts Thor as he pushed the sword deeper through his chest, telling him “you know the pain of All-Black, don’t you? Well… now you’ve had the honor of being killed by its creator.” Knull doesn’t get to kill the Asgardian Avenger, as Iron Man takes control of a Celestial. The villain captures Dylan and disappears as the Silver Surfer makes his triumphant return as the Herald for the God of Light.

It’s unclear how Thor was freed from Donald Blake’s realm and where exactly this scene takes place in continuity. Regardless, Thor certainly holds his own against the King in Black – which is more than most heroes can say. However, Knull is even too powerful for him, using All-Black the Necrosword to nearly kill him with a single blow. Thankfully, Thor had back-up in the form of his fellow heroes, otherwise, the King in Black would have put a permanent end to the hero’s life.
