Warning! Spoilers for Venom #200 by Marvel Comics below.

Eddie Brock has taken the role as the new King in Black, meaning the title of Venom was up for grabs in the Marvel Universe. In the final chapter of Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman’s run on the villain-turned-hero, it’s revealed a new character has become Venom and grabbed hold of the powerful symbiote: Eddie’s son Dylan.

The King in Black event from Marvel Comics featured Knull, the God of Symbiotes, nearly destroying the 616-universe. His army covered the Earth in darkness, infected some of the greatest heroes including numerous Avengers, and came close to being victorious in his fight for domination. However, thanks to the Enigma Force, Eddie Brock was able to become the new God of Light. With the epic cosmic power, he was able to take down the King in Black and save the Earth from being turned into a symbiote hellhole. After the defeat, Eddie became the new King in Black and has used his incredible new abilities for good.

Venom #200 by Cates, Stegman, JP Mayer, Frank Martin, and a number of guest artists and creators, concludes the most recent ongoing series on the symbiote hero. The story reveals Venom has used his new powers – including being omnipresent – as the King in Black for good, but that connecting with billions of symbiotes across the galaxy has drained his human form and made his real body weaker. Meanwhile, his son Dylan is struggling with being a normal kid. Dylan is getting into fights with a bully at school, leading to numerous visits with his school principal. He’s shown trying to break up a mugging by the villain Jack O’Lanterm, but accidentally gets shot. The Venom symbiote (who was in his dog form) bonds with Dylan to save him and become the hero.

Eddie arrives on the scene and tells Dylan he isn’t mad at him and that he just wants him to be happy. Recognizing there’s no safer place in the galaxy than a symbiote, Eddie gives him his blessing to dawn his own first symbiote. He says Dylan isn’t Venom, but “we are Venom together.” The comic ends with the new Venom, a hulking symbiote with chains around his body, swinging away. It’s a touching passing of the mantle between father and son.

While it once seemed Dylan wasn’t destined to have the same future as his father, Eddie finally understood his son was meant to be the next Venom. Considering Eddie can access the symbiote hive whenever he likes, giving Dylan the Venom symbiote actually means he can make sure his son is safe and check in on him when needed. It seems Dylan’s adventures will continue in the upcoming series of Venom from Al Ewing, Ram V, and Bryan Hitch, as the chained version of the character can be seen in promo images for their recently announced arc. Venom#200 is in stores now.
