As a supporting character in Mike Judge’s King of the Hill, Bill Dauterive is the divorced, overweight neighbor and friend to Hank Hill. Bill suffers from clinical depression; Hank, Dale, and Boomhauer spend much of the series talking Bill off the edge. Bill crosses the line many times, though, and the situations he finds himself in are equal parts heartbreaking and hilarious.

Whether he’s harboring a secret obsession with Peggy Hill, missing his ex-wife Lenore, or getting involved with sketchy individuals, Bill proves himself to be a lover at heart – yet one who would benefit from a few therapy sessions. After all, the military barber just wants companionship and a little bit of romance in his life. Who could blame him?

10 Bill Of The Hill

A hopeless romantic, the single and ready to mingle Bill has set his sights on one special woman in his friend circle: Peggy Hill. In fact, Bill’s crush on Peggy crosses into creepy territory when he makes it known he’d be more than happy to see Peggy’s marriage with Hank dissolve so he stands a chance to win her heart.

Poor Bill doesn’t know Peggy just isn’t feeling it, even if Hank somehow exits her life. She finds him unstable, messy, and weird.

9 Santa Bill

In one holiday episode, Bill avoids the Christmas blues by donning a Santa costume and decorating his house to the nines. Christmas comes and goes, and then New Year’s, but Bill doesn’t lose his Christmas cheer or his attire.

In fact, many months transpire with Bill still dressed as Santa. As his grasp on reality wanes, Bill’s velvety, unwashed suit becomes muddled with stains and holes.

8 Why Do You Keep Calling Me Bill?

In another holiday episode, Bill’s mental breakdown comes in the form of dressing up like his ex-wife Lenore. While Bill loves the holidays, the entire season was ruined when Lenore left him seven years before.

Bill’s deep-rooted trauma about his failed marriage causes him to wear dresses and assume Lenore’s identity. Instead of ostracizing his suffering friend, Hank slips into a dress at his holiday party to make Bill feel less alone.

7 Kill Bill

Bill doesn’t hold back from expressing himself or his feelings, no matter how sad his sentiments may be. While his buds Hank, Dale, and Boomhauer were raised to keep everything inside, Bill just lets it all bleed out.

That’s why there’s no killing Bill Dauterive. Let Uma Thurman know this King of the Hill character has already put himself through the emotional ringer multiple times, and he always lives to tell the tale.

6 Hot Dog Wings

One of the many ways Bill deals with his depressive episodes is by eating food. Bill can chow down, and he even gets involved in a competitive hot dog eating circuit.

Bill turns out to be very good at eating lots of food in a short amount of time. Some might say Bill is too good, and it doesn’t take long for him to realize this talent is too good to be true – namely because it’s so unhealthy.

5 Fried Food Brings World Peace

Bill Dauterive is at his best when surrounded by good food and good friends. These experiences give Bill the mental clarity he needs to solve all the world’s pressing issues.

When he and Boomhauer get their hands on a deep fryer, they batter and then dip everything in sight into a boiling vat of oil. Full of fried goodness, Bill realizes fried food has the power to beckon an era of intergalactic peace.

4 Do You Even Lift, Hank?

Belonging is what matters most to Bill, and he will go to great lengths to fit in. When he needs to get in shape for an upcoming Army physical, Bill gets involved with a group of annoying bodybuilders who push him to focus on his muscles rather than on his endurance.

Bill’s new crew affect his attitude, and he starts mouthing off to Hank, Dale, and Boomhauer. Eventually, Bill does so much weightlifting that he ruptures his own rectum.

3 Dumb & Dumber

Bill and Dale Gribble are two reactionary peas in a pod. While Dale gets worked up about conspiracy theories, Bill focuses his emotional energy on one-upping his perceived enemies.

When Bill and Dale get together, the result is always very bad. Fortunately, Hank usually saves the pair from self-inflicted imminent doom.

2 Bill Is Always Watching

It’s true: as the only single person on Rainey Street, Bill doesn’t have much more to do besides reporting for work as an Army barber and spying on his neighbors. Bill’s stalker vibes definitely aren’t cool, but they make for funny situational humor.

Bill is so clueless about relating to women that he goes as far as faking an injury to earn the attention of a woman who starts running in the alley behind his house. Talk about desperate.

1 Lenore Is Coming Back

Part of what makes Bill so funny is that he fits the profile of the quirky, overly sensitive friend without sacrificing his sense of humanity as a character. Everyone knows the type of middle-aged person who will never get over an old heartbreak.

Bill fits the profile to a tee, spending years convincing himself his Lenore will return. When she does, it becomes clear her departure was ultimately a good thing for Bill.
