It’s been a long time coming, but Kingdom Hearts 3 finally gets its release date. The game was originally revealed by Square Enix as part of E3 2013, and at that point it seemed as though fans of the Disney-centric RPG series would have another chapter in Sora’s adventures.

However, as the years went on, the wait grew more and more anxious for Kingdom Hearts fans. Although there were some updates along the way, finite details on when the game would launch were few and far between, with the game’s developers suggesting that the title still had some way to go at the beginning of 2017. Square Enix did then pencil in a potential release date of 2018, but still nothing was confirmed.

At long last, though, Kingdom Hearts fans have an official release date to put in their diaries alongside the brand new Kingdom Hearts III gameplay trailer, albeit one that is a little later than first expected. The good news for Kingdom Hearts players is that the game finally has a release date; the bad news is that the title has seen one more delay, with the game now launching on January 29, 2019 for Xbox One and PS4.

The timing of this reveal may be a bit of a surprise to some, given that Square Enix has its own presentation at E3 2018 and therefore a perfect time to announce the release date with gusto. However, the franchise’s Twitter page explained the reason, with director Tetsuya Nomura stating that the game’s launch date was announced as part of the Kingdom Hearts Orchestra World Tour. The director also apologised for taking a “little more time than initially planned” in the same post.

Although there’s bound to be a little disappointment that the game still needs a little more time to be finished, most Kingdom Hearts fans will most likely be happy to finally have a release date at all. Over the years there had been a worry that the game would end up in the same vaporware bracket as Starcraft: Ghost or Half-Life 3, as a much-wanted title that would never see the light of day.

Nonetheless, the game is looking to be launching with aplomb. Another trailer for the game this year showcased that Kingdom Hearts 3 would include a world based on Monsters, Inc. and there will no doubt be plenty more surprises in store within the game. Hopefully, the title will match up to the expectations set by the thirteen years since Kingdom Hearts 2.
