Kingdom Hearts creator Tetsuya Nomura recently discussed some of his plans for the future of his iconic Disney/Final Fantasy crossover RPG franchise, including an intriguing hint at an impending Nintendo-related reveal. This comes right as the latest installment in the series, the rhythm-based spin-off Kingdom Hearts: Melody Of Memory, is nearing its planned November release date across all current consoles.

For nearly 20 years now, Kingdom Hearts has thrilled fans with the far-reaching (and often very confusing) story of kid hero Sora as he partners up with iconic Disney characters like Goofy and Donald Duck on a quest to defeat the forces of darkness and bring peace to the many worlds of Disney canon. While primarily at home on PlayStation consoles (as the original Kingdom Hearts was first released on the PS2 back in 2002), the series has always had a strong presence on Nintendo systems thanks to handheld spin-offs like Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories on the Gameboy Advance and Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance on the 3DS. While previous reports have indicated that the Nintendo Switch won’t have as many Kingdom Hearts titles, the franchise’s main architect has just hinted that Nintendo fans won’t be left entirely out in the cold in the months to come.

According to Go Nintendo, Tetsuya Nomura recently sat down for an interview with a Japanese Nintendo magazine, during which he cryptically hinted at something Kingdom Hearts-related on the horizon. After agreeing with the interviewer noting that there hasn’t been a Kingdom Hearts titled helmed by Nomura on a Nintendo console, the developer coyly added that he thinks that he and his studio may have a project that lands on Nintendo in the near future. So far, there hasn’t been any further context to Nomura’s statement, but his interview will be printed in full in November.

Naturally, some fans have already begun speculating as to what Nomura is talking about, with the most popular theory being that Sora will finally make his often-requested appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a guest DLC fighter. In the meantime, Kingdom Hearts fans have had no shortage of new content this year. In addition to the aforementioned Melody Of Memory, 2020 has seen the release of the Kingdom Hearts III: Re-Mind DLC, which added additional context to that game’s traditionally cryptic ending, and the mobile phone-based Kingdom Hearts: Dark Road, which shed some light on the origins of longtime villain Master Xehanort.

Tetsuya Nomura is infamous for keeping fans guessing in both his works and on social media, so his hints at upcoming Nintendo-related Kingdom Hearts content could mean anything. Still, it’s certainly an exciting time to be a fan of Square Enix’s seminal RPG franchise, given that its 20th anniversary is coming in 2022. Even before that though, it looks like Kingdom Hearts enthusiasts will have something to look forward to when more information on the series’ future Nintendo plans inevitably comes forward.
