If a recent posting from the Entertainment Software Ratings Board is to be believed, Kirby might be using guns in the upcoming Kirby and the Forgotten Land. Nintendo’s adorable little pink puffball Kirby is no stranger to weapons, as his various alternate forms have allowed him to wield swords, boomerangs, a Cyclops-like energy visor, and even bombs throughout his many platforming adventures over the years. In his many appearances in the Super Smash Bros. series, Kirby has utilized the hammers, baseball bats, and laser swords (but not the Keyblade from Kingdom Hearts) that are available to all members of the crossover fighter’s roster, along with a few weapons that he can copy by inhaling opponents.

While this arsenal includes projectile-based weapons like the Super Scope and Ray Gun, it’s pretty rare for Kirby to use guns outside of Super Smash Bros. He wielded a Revolver in the cowboy-themed Quick Draw minigame in Kirby’s Adventure, and the original Japanese version of the Kirby: Right Back At Ya! anime had a scene of Kirby handling a firearm while attempting to be a police officer, but for the most part the inflatable hero has preferred to use his more fantastical ability-copying powers while battling the forces of evil. This hasn’t stopped fans from creating humorous memes of Kirby using a gun, at least when they aren’t imagining Kirby creating frightening yarn dolls or wielding a knife.

Those memes might very well become a reality in Kirby and the Forgotten Land, at least according to a rating summary of the game on the ESRB’s website. According to this listing, players will use “swords, bombs, and blaster-type pistols” to defeat enemies, and that some of these weapons “allow players to use targeting/crosshairs for ranged firing.” The ERSB listing also described Kirby and the Forgotten Land’s boss battles as “frenetic, with laser fire, explosions, and projectiles flying at Kirby, often from a close-up perspective,” though the game retains an E10+ Rating for “Cartoon Violence.” YouTuber GameXplain noticed the ERSB’s mention of guns in Kirby and the Forgotten Land in a recent video, pointing out the times Kirby has used firearms in past games and wondering about how the ranged crosshairs mentioned in the ESRB’s report will affect Forgotten Land’s gameplay.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land was first announced during September’s Nintendo Direct livestream event with a trailer showing Kirby exploring the colorful ruins of a surprisingly modern-looking civilization not unlike the one shown in Super Mario Odyssey. Since then, a leak from the Australian Classification Board suggested that Kirby and the Forgotten Land could have some sort of online component, though Nintendo has yet to confirm if this involves some kind of multiplayer mode or simply an online leaderboard.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land is rated E10+ for ages ten and up, so fans probably shouldn’t expect any gunplay more violent than Kirby zapping Mario with a laser beam in Super Smash Bros. Still, it appears that Kirby and the Forgotten Land will feature some form of projectile-based combat when it launches on the Nintendo Switch sometime this Spring – and bringing fans ever closer to a canon version of those Kirby gun memes.
