Kit Harington says he’s waiting on Marvel to call him about his future as Black Knight. Last year, Harington traded out his Game of Thrones sword for… another sword as he joined the MCU in the pivotal role of Dane Whitman. He starred in Eternals, Chloé Zhao’s somewhat divisive godly epic that arrived in theaters in November. Harington’s Dane was among the few human characters in the film; much of Eternals instead focused on the titular cosmic beings who were sent to Earth thousands of years ago to protect humanity from the Deviants.

Overall, Harington’s role in Eternals is rather small. As the boyfriend of Sersi (Gemma Chan), he ends up sitting out for much of the movie’s action, only popping up occasionally to provide support. It’s the second of Eternals‘ two end-credit scenes that gives Dane his due by setting up his future within the MCU. In the scene, Dane receives a special sword that, while not named, is the Ebony Blade from the comics. This, along with a brief vocal appearance from Mahershala Ali’s Blade, sets up Harington’s future as the MCU’s Black Knight.

It’s clear Marvel has future plans for Harington in the MCU, but evidently the studio has not shared them with the actor himself. Speaking recently during an appearance on The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show, Harington revealed whether he has any idea about what might lie ahead for him. He insisted he knows nothing, and then insisted that he isn’t lying either. Harington’s full response was:

“No, not that I know of. It sounds like a very political answer. It’s exciting for me. The last film, as anyone who all have seen, it kind of sets an idea up that I might go further, so I’m hoping. But I think whenever you’re answering questions about these things, people point at you and say ‘liar’ as if you know more than other people, I have no idea. I genuinely don’t. I’m waiting for a call on it at some point.”

Marvel is notoriously secretive when it comes to future projects, and while one might assume the studio would wish to keep its talent appraised of future plans, that doesn’t seem to be its preferred way of operating. This can be frustrating for some, but in Harington’s case, the actor can perhaps take some solace in knowing there definitely is a plan for him. Black Knight is a major character in the comics, and Marvel isn’t known for introducing pivotal characters without letting them realize their full potential. Eternals‘ Ebony Blade tease shows there is more ahead for Black Knight, even if Harington doesn’t quite know what that means yet.

As soon as Eternals was released, fans began to speculate about where Harington might turn up next. The long-awaited Blade movie could be a contender based on Ali’s brief role in the Eternals scene, and no one has ruled out a sequel for Zhao’s movie. There could even be a Black Knight solo project on the horizon. Right now, everything is speculation, but perhaps as the MCU continues to move further into its Phase 4, new details about what lies beyond 2023 will emerge.
