New photos from the set of Netflix’s Knives Out 2 show Dave Bautista beside Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc in Greece. Little is known about the plot of the sequel to 2019’s critically acclaimed murder mystery; however, while the Thrombey family won’t be returning, writer/director Rian Johnson has assembled another star-studded cast around Craig’s eccentric detective. Knives Out 2 is set to feature Edward Norton, Kate Hudson, Kathryn Hahn, Janelle Monae, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, and Dave Bautista.

Since leaving the WWE, Bautista has successfully made the transition to acting with highest-profile roles in films like the MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead, and Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming Dune remake. Despite his stock haven risen exponentially over the past decade, Bautista has said he finds joining the cast of Knives Out 2 terrifying. Johnson confirmed the start of production this week and numerous photos of Craig and other cast mates have been making their way online. One of the photos shows Bautista reuniting with his Spectre costar on the Greek Island of Spetses.

Set photos have come out via Jason Adams on Twitter showing Craig give Bautista a big hug. They were in full costume as they appeared to be filming a scene where they board a boat. Piggybacking off of Blanc’s new Mediterranean look, Bautista’s character can be seen wearing pink pants and a cheetah-print shirt (partially unbuttoned, of course). Both actors also sport masks as Hollywood productions continue adhering to COVID-19 guidelines. Check out the photos below:

As photos and other details of the film continue to surface, the specifics of Bautista’s character are yet to be known. One shouldn’t assume Bautista will be playing a comic relief character as he does in the MCU or a brutish villain like he did exchanging fisticuffs with Craig in the 24th Bond film. Clearly, Bautista aims to explore a variety of interesting characters in his career and has high hopes for his role in Knives Out 2. Johnson’s writing almost always subverts expectations (for better or worse). Similar to how Chris Evans played against type as the spoiled and conniving grandson in the original film, Bautista’s contributions to the sequel should be surprising.

Knives Out 2 already looks a lot different than the original. No longer in New England, the new film could see Blanc tangled up in a mystery while on vacation similar to Agatha Christie’s Murder in Paradise; investigating vacationers of which Bautista’s character is one. Johnson’s deal with Netflix gives himself complete creative control of Knives Out 2 and 3. So, aside from Craig’s character, the follow-ups will most likely feel completely different and comply with an anthology format. Aware of the streaming service’s reputation, one of the reasons Bautista wanted to do Army of the Dead was to establish a similar working relationship with the streamer. A release date for the highly anticipated murder mystery has yet to be announced, but it’s clear the project is of high priority for Netflix.
