In a fun example of audiences bringing movies to life, Knives Out director Rian Johnson has revealed that fans have been emailing the film’s main character, Marta Cabrera (Ana de Armas). Since its release last November, Knives Out has taken the world by storm thanks to its starry cast, twisty murder mystery premise, and incredible sweaters. The film has become something of a box office juggernaut by reaching over $300 million worldwide even after being available for home video, a feat that not many original films achieve.

Knives Out follows the spoiled rotten Thrombey family after their patriarch, Harlan (Christopher Plummer), is found dead. Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is soon brought in to investigate the family members and is aided by Harlan’s nurse Marta, who steadily becomes the film’s hero through her kind nature. The sprawling cast also includes Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Katherine Langford, Jaeden Martell, Lakeith Stanfield, and Toni Collette.

At a pivotal moment in the film, Marta checks her email after discovering someone is blackmailing her. Eagle-eyed fans noted her address, and according to Johnson, they’ve started contacting it. Johnson explained on Twitter that “one of our producers just thought to check the email address we show for Marta in Knives Out.” They were pleasantly surprised to discover Marta’s account has over 200 emails, all from fans of the film. Check out Johnson’s message below:

It’s a little hard to read what the emails themselves say, but most seem to be either congratulating Marta on a job well done or sharing praise for the film. Knives Out has become so successful that a sequel is officially on the way, with Johnson once again set to write and direct. Craig is expected to return as Blanc, though he’ll likely be the only Knives Out cast member to return as Johnson has said he wants to style Blanc’s adventures like Agatha Christie’s detective stories, where the investigator remains the same but the cast of characters around him always changes.

It’s always gratifying to see audiences connecting with films, and Knives Out has been a pleasant surprise from start to finish. The fact that fans enjoyed the film enough to email one of its characters speaks volumes to how beloved both Marta and Knives Out have become. The attention feels well deserved, since it’s clear a lot of thought and care was put into the film. Even though Marta likely won’t be in Knives Out 2, here’s hoping it’ll feature another character fans will love as much as her.
