The Twitter account for Knives Out teasingly called out Adam Driver’s sweater in a new still for his upcoming film House of Gucci. Directed by Rian Johnson, Knives Out premiered in 2019 to rave reviews. A murder mystery set in Massachusetts, the Oscar-nominated film follows an eccentric, canny detective as he investigates a posh family in an effort to determine who killed the clan’s wealthy patriarch. Knives Out featured a star-studded cast, including Christopher Plummer, Daniel Craig, Ana de Armas, Lakeith Stanfield, Chris Evans, Toni Colette, Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Johnson, Michael Shannon, Katherine Langford, and Jaeden Martell.

In Knives Out, Evans portrays Ransom, the entitled grandson of Harlan Thrombey (Plummer). For most of the film, his character dons a white, chunky cable-knit sweater, a costume choice that quickly became iconic (and meme-worthy) on social media. Eventually, the sweater mania reached an unexpected fever pitch upon the movie’s debut. At one point, the Knives Out Twitter account briefly changed its name to “Chris Evans’ Sweater Stan Account” and gave away a hundred sweatshirts sporting a still of Ransom in his cozy outfit. The Alamo Drafthouse in Los Angeles hosted a “sweaters only” screening of the film. Popular retailers, including L.L. Bean, quickly sold out of similar-looking dupes. By the end of the frenzy, Evans’ sweater had inadvertently become its own character in Knives Out.

As a result, the Twitter account for Knives Out responded to an image of Adam Driver wearing a comparable pullover with a cheeky “naw this is from knives out 2.”

Last week, a new image of Ridley Scott’s biographical crime film House of Gucci depicted Driver as Maurizio Gucci, the former head of the renowned fashion house. Wearing an analogously chunky cable-knit sweater, Driver stands in front of lush, snow-capped mountains with his arm around Lady Gaga, embodying the role of Patrizia Reggiani. In the movie, Gaga’s character is arrested and convicted for planning the assassination of Driver’s Gucci. In another parallel to Knives Out, Scott’s project appears to partially lean into the murder mystery aspect of the notorious case. It also promises an all-star cast, with Al Pacino, Jeremy Irons, Jared Leto, Jack Huston, and Reeve Carney rounding out the call sheet.

Considering Twitter’s propensity for tongue-in-cheek mocking, as well as the infamy of Evans’ white sweater in Knives Out, it is no surprise that social media has already seized upon Driver’s lookalike costuming. Of course, perhaps it is less of a coincidence and more of an expected uniform for the fabulously wealthy. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Evans’ preppy pullover of the past continues to find new life on the shoulders of Driver’s character. Hopefully, L.L. Bean has already re-stocked its shelves in anticipation of Scott’s film.
