The Knives Out Twitter took a swipe at the recent announcement that Rian Johnson’s sequels will be going to Netflix in a massive deal. The Agatha Christie-style murder mystery debuted in 2019 and quickly became a critical darling and box office success. Written and directed by Johnson, the film stars Daniel Craig as detective Benoit Blanc while he investigates the suspicious death of novelist Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) and his ruthless extended family.

Knives Out grossed $311 million against a somewhat modest $40 million budget, putting Johnson and his co-creator Ram Bergman in a unique position. The pair exclusively own the rights to the franchise, giving them the ability to shop the sequels around. They’ve reportedly found a buyer in Netflix after a bidding war between them, Apple, and Amazon. The price for two sequels? Roughly $450 million. With the franchise switching hands, it now looks like Knives Out‘s popular Twitter account will, too.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Knives Out has continued to post memes and commentary about the industry through the film’s lens of wry humor, and they’ve done the same with the recent Netflix announcement. Using a picture from the movie where Jamie Lee Curtis’ Linda Drysdale tries to swindle Ana de Armas’ Marta Cabrera, the account’s social media manager laments that they most likely won’t be a part of Knives Out 2. The picture has Linda Drysdale as Netflix telling the social media manager, “I thought you should’ve been there. I was voted out.”

While fans will be excited to hear that both Knives Out 2 and Knives Out 3 are essentially a guarantee, it puts the film’s original studio in an awkward position. MRC and Lionsgate produced and distributed the first film, but they were likely outbid by Netflix who has proven time and time again its willingness to shell out massive amounts of money for established content. The report indicates that Knives Out 2 will begin filming in June with an on-location shoot in Greece, so it certainly seems like the deal is close to being sealed, and Netflix wants the films out as fast as possible.

Unfortunately for Lionsgate and the person who runs the Knives Out Twitter, they will have to relinquish control of everything relating to the first film. One good thing about the unprecedented deal, though, is that Johnson and Bergman will maintain creative control over the franchise. Knives Out and its potential sequels have stayed in the conversation through its timely plot and continued social media presence. Netflix might want to poach the social media manager in the same way they poached Johnson if they’re going to continue the Twitter account’s hilarious streak.
