Knockout City, the new dodgeball battle royale from Velan Studios and EA, has over two million accounts since its May 21 launch. The first 10 days of the launch were a block party event, with special objectives for new players to complete. The developers were also so confident in the appeal of the game they made it free for the first 10, so players could try before purchasing. It’s currently unclear if those two million accounts are from the free days, or players who continued beyond the trial period.

Knockout City strategy relies heavily on timing, making throwing and ball type even more critical for a win. In Knockout City, players must team up to defeat opponents in a game of virtual dodgeball. Evolved from lining up against a wall in gym class, these dodgeball matches take place in one of five maps available in the game. There are six modes currently available in-game, with varying team sizes and objectives for each. Games comprise of up to three matches as teams fight for best two out of three victories. Players can start playing ranked games once they reach level 10, and can join a crew from their first time logging in.

Each round in Knockout City also features a unique special ball, giving the holder a gameplay twist. Knockout City special balls include the Sniper Ball, Cage Ball, Bomb Ball, Moon Ball, and Multi Ball. Each boasts its own learning curve, strengths and weaknesses in gameplay, but after multiple matches a clear winner and loser have emerged from the pack.

The Best (And Worst) Special Balls in Knockout City

The best special ball in Knockout City is undoubtedly the Bomb ball. Its explosive power allows players to damage multiple enemies at once, and the aftershock caused by the explosion sets teammates up well for a K.O. Once picked up, players have mere seconds to lob the ball, but it’s crucial not to throw too early, lest opponents catch the ball and throw it back before detonation. The Bomb Ball is an art in timing, a crucial gameplay technique in Knockout City.

Meanwhile, the worst special ball in Knockout City is the Moon ball. When grabbed, it allows players to jump through the air in a weightless mimicry of the moon’s gravity. While this can prove useful to gain the high ground on maps with multiple levels, ultimately it doesn’t add any gameplay advantage. The slower pace of the Moon Ball jump also gives opponents more time to hit players midair. However, it is does have one of the easiest learning curves of all the special balls in Knockout City.
