Both Marcel and Kol of The Originals fame are set to return to screens in Legacies season 4, but there is a good chance that their cameos will actually be a fakeout. Legacies season 4 has been full of surprises for those who have watched The Originals spinoff from the start. The season started with Hope Mikaelson (Danielle Rose Russell) still acting as the show’s heroine, only for her to transform into the Tribrid, turn off her humanity, and become the most inhumane monster since Klaus (Joseph Morgan).

Since then, Hope has hospitalized Alaric (Matthew Davis) and tortured Aurora (Rebecca Breeds), proving that no Originals alum is safe from her. Although a sire bond-breaking moment of rebellion stopped Hope from killing Aurora (just about), the former Legacies heroine still seems no closer to regaining her humanity and, along with it, her old heroism. However, the return of two more Originals supporting stars (and The Vampire Diaries, in Kol’s case) may change all this.

Kol Mikaelson (Nathaniel Buzolic), Hope’s uncle, and Marcel Gerard (Charles Michael Davis), her adoptive brother, are both set to return in Legacies season 4, episode 15, “Everything That Can Be Lost May Also Be Found.” While that title hits heavily implies that Hope’s humanity might finally return with the TVD and Originals alums (alongside, potentially, her revived Legacies love interest Landon), viewers ought to be careful about getting their hopes up. After all, there’s a good chance that the much-vaunted return from Marcel and Kol will be a fakeout thanks to the frequent use of dream sequences and the therapy box, which literalizes internal fantasies and imagined conflicts in Legacies. However, this wouldn’t be the worst thing, as the duo could be hard to integrate into the existing cast of Legacies.

This issue already occurred in Legacies season 4 with Aurora, who was repeatedly bested in battles of both wits and physical strength by Hope. Seeing Hope knock the once-formidable Aurora about so hard that Lizzie broke Hope’s sire bond to save her made the Originals character seem less threatening in retrospect. This is an issue that Legacies season 4 risks with the return of Kol and Marcel, too. While the two characters were not quite as villainous as Aurora, they were both tough and competent antiheroes (though Kol moved back and forth between antihero and villain), and seeing them easily trounced by the Tribrid Hope could be a disappointing comeback.

However, it is still possible that the return of Kol and Marcel won’t be limited to the therapy box and will involve their actual selves. The fact that Hope already hospitalized Alaric and almost killed Aurora might mean that the pair would be smart enough to avoid a direct confrontation with the Tribrid, particularly when both their Originals characters were too canny to walk into an obvious trap. Not only that, but Legacies season 4 badly fumbled much of Hope’s villainous turn and the show has ground her character development to a halt since she turned off her humanity, meaning the creators of the series might be aware that she needs to return to her old self soon. As a result, The Originalsstars could be the conduit for this—meaning they can appear in Legacies season 4 as themselves without risking their lives in the process.
