Korean drama Snowdrop will make its U.S. debut via Disney+. The series, set in the 1980s, tells the story of a wounded North Korean spy who stumbles into a university dormitory in Seoul. One of the students tends to his wounds and hides him, sparking a romance between them that gets tested by political divisions and life-threatening secrets. Snowdrop stars Jisoo of K-pop girl group BLACKPINK and Jung Hae-In, known for his roles in Tune in for Love and While You Were Sleeping.

After premiering on Korean television network JTBC and Disney+ in Asia-Pacific regions a few weeks ago, Snowdrop is coming to Disney+ in the U.S., according to Forbes. The 16-part series is set to debut on Feb. 9, following huge success overseas. Snowdrop became one of the top five most-watched titles in the majority of APAC markets during its first five weeks on Disney+.

Amid its success, Snowdrop has also received its share of controversy. Some petitioned for the show to be removed for inaccurately depicting a North Korean spy involved with Korea’s pro-democracy movement, as many involved in the protests for democracy were accused of being spies in the 1980s. JTBC asserted that the story was fictional. Adding to the show’s adversities was the death of actor Kim Mi-soo, who played a supporting role as Jisoo’s dormmate.

The series has nonetheless attracted anticipation. Snowdrop is the handiwork of writer Yoo Hyun-mi and director Jo Hyun-tak, who previously collaborated on 2018 thriller, Sky Castle. The show adds to Disney+’s growing variety of programs as the streaming service aims to release more than 100 new titles per year.
