Kurt Russell says he would be willing to return as Mr. Nobody for Fast and Furious 9. Russell made his debut in the multi-billion dollar Fast and the Furious franchise in the seventh installment, Fast and Furious 7. The movie went on to gross over $1.5 billion worldwide, more than all the previous Fast and the Furious movies combined. Russell played the part of Mr. Nobody, a covert operations leader who helps Dom in his quest to stop Shaw, in return for Dom’s help in stopping Jakande from obtaining God’s Eye.

Mr. Nobody’s story continues in The Fate of the Furious, which has enjoyed huge box office success already, securing the biggest opening of all time, with $532 million, breaking the previous record set by Star Wars: The Force Awakens. In The Fate of the Furious, Mr. Nobody once again cements himself as one of the best characters within the franchise; his friendly and easygoing personality goes against that which audiences would expect from a government agent, and Russell plays him to perfection.

With the massive success of The Fate of the Furious, and two more movies set to be made within the franchise, talk now turns to Fast and Furious 9, which is scheduled for release in 2019. While promoting his newest movie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, in which he plays Ego the Living Planet, Russell spoke to Screen Rant about his hopes for the future of the Fast and the Furious franchise, and whether he would be up for playing Mr. Nobody for a third time (at least).

Well, all my life I’ve never been one for sequels and stuff. I’ve done it one time with Escape From LA, which was from Escape From New York, which was 17 years earlier. But we live in a different time now. We live in a time where that’s the norm. I’ve never had anything against it, I just think that each time what I think they’ve learned now, is that you can’t just throw a sequel out there because you did good business. You have to go after it to make it even better. It puts more pressure on you. That, I like! That, I think, is a challenge, and every time you look at what it is, and if you like it and you think you’ve got a reason to do it, you do it. If there’s not you don’t.

Russell makes a good point: Sequels used to be derided by pretty much everyone. They were often something a studio would put out to make a quick buck off the success of a first movie, and as such, sequels were often poorly written and directed, and the movies suffered from the lack of budget and time spent on them. Now, though, sequels are the place to be; a movie’s success is often judged on whether or not at least one sequel (or spinoff) is ordered.

With Guardians of the Galaxy, Russell will already realize that this second installment is equally as good, if not better than its predecessor, and though it might be Russell’s first time in the franchise, he could possibly come back for more in Guardians of the Galaxy 3. As for Fast and the Furious 9, the news that Russell is up for reprising his role for a third time will be sure to please many fans. Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel are also set to return together despite reports of a feud. However, the script for Fast and the Furious 9 is supposedly not even written yet, so though Russell might be up for it, there’s no guarantee he’ll actually be asked back, at all.
