KUWTK: Lamar Odom’s Daughter Says His Marriage to Khloe Was ‘Toxic’

Destiny Odom is Lamar Odom’s daughter and she’s opened up about her father’s marriage to Khloé Kardashian from Keeping Up with the Kardashians, describing it as “toxic.”

Lamar met his ex-girlfriend Liza Morales while attending high school in Queens, New York. They started dating in Grade 11 and had three children together later on. Tragically, one of their children, Jayden, passed away unexpectedly six months after he was born. Morales and Odom broke up in the 2000s, but they continue to co-parent Destiny and Lamar Jr. together. In 2009, Lamar and Khloé got married after a month of knowing each other. Their wedding was featured on Keeping Up with the Kardashians season 4. Kris Jenner frantically pulled the event together in only 9 days. In 2011, the Kardashian family was on the rise and Khloé made it clear that she wasn’t “just a basketball wife.” By 2012, Lamar and Khloe’s relationship could only be described as a celebrity marriage. At this point, Odom began to feel pressure and tension which caused problems in their relationship. Khloé filed for divorce in 2013, but the proceedings were never finalized, meaning that the couple is still legally married to this day. During an episode of KUWTK that aired in 2014, Khloe revealed that Lamar was unfaithful to her. Around the same time, it was revealed that Odom had struggled with substance abuse for many years. In 2015, Lamar overdosed in Las Vegas and was in a coma for several days. Destiny has taken the time to reflect on her father’s marriage to Kardashian. 

When Khloé and Lamar met, they were both rising stars. Odom was playing for the LA Lakers and Khloé was a pop culture sensation because of her family’s reality TV show. Due to their shared success, they started their own spinoff show, Khloé and Lamar. They also had other ventures together which brought them more wealth and success than they would have attained separately. Because of this, Destiny believes that their shared fame became like a drug to Lamar. At the time, he was also battling other addictions. His daughter believes the notoriety he gained by being associated with the Kardashian-Jenner family made things worse. The basketball player’s daughter said that their marriage caused a strain on her relationship with her father. Destiny feels that Lamar’s desire for more fame and success put distance between them. “I wouldn’t say it was a matter of my dad loves Khloe more than me,” Destiny said. “I think that my dad has an addictive personality, so my dad was addicted to the attention he got with Khloe more than me.” 

In December 2013,  Khloé Kardashian filed for divorce from Lamar, and Destiny was pleased that their marriage was over. During the messy divorce proceedings, Odom came forward about his unfaithful and abusive treatment of his ex, which he blamed on being under the influence. “You have to [forgive] in order to move on,” Destiny said. “Just for yourself, you have to forgive. I would say every day is a step at a time. Every day is a new struggle, new chapter.” Destiny knew that her father would be closer to her due to the divorce, but he still needed to work on himself.

When Lamar overdosed in 2015, Khloé, Kris, and Kim Kardashian were by his side, as stated in his memoir. Destiny was shocked that Khloé Kardashian and her family were there for him because Lamar and Khloé’s relationship was over at that point. “A lot of people in our circle were confused. Their relationship is very toxic,” Destiny said. The basketball player’s daughter continued to describe how it was a challenge to manage Odom’s addictions, but he was more apologetic about those issues. She revealed that her father was motivated to go to rehab after his drug overdose because he wanted to work on his relationship with his daughter. 

Destiny has a right to be upset about Lamar’s marriage to Khloé since it impacted her relationship with her father. That being said, their fallout wasn’t entirely Khloe’s fault. It would be unfair of Destiny to blame it all on the Keeping Up with the Kardashians star. After all, Lamar has been battling demons of his own for a long time, and he struggled to deal with those same demons during his marriage to Khloe. Now that Lamar’s relationship with Khloé is over, it appears as though Lamar and Destiny are in a better place.
