After filing for divorce in February, fans of Keeping Up With the Kardashians star Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have since begun to wonder if the pair’s split was a publicity stunt all along. Citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for the demise of their marriage, the timing seems to have coincided with momentous moments in the star’s professional lives. As Kim and Kanye continue to support each other in endeavors that would benefit from any added publicity, speculation grows around how irreconcilable their relationship really is.

Kim and Kanye are no strangers to publicity as a couple, as their relationship has consistently involved grand spectacles. From their engagement involving a 50-piece orchestra at San Francisco’s AT&T Park to their lavish $2.8 million wedding in Italy, as well as every birthday present in between, including a serenade from saxophonist Kenny G and the most recent hologram of Kim’s late father Robert Kardashian, the Wests notably go big or go home.

Their divorce has proved no different, as the six-month ordeal has constantly made headlines. After months of teasing the story in the promo for KUWTK, fans were given the first glimpse into the marriage breakdown in the June finale. Kim was filmed breaking down and discussing how she wishes for a relationship with small things, such as a workout partner and someone to watch TV with. In the month following, Kanye began to tease his tenth studio album titled Donda, named after his late mother. Originally intended to be released in July 2020 before an endless string of pushbacks, the hype for Donda began to gain traction a year later, as a leaked tracklist included titles such as “Losing My Family and “No Child Left Behind.

In August 2021, questions accelerated around the intentions of the divorce as Kanye hosted a string of listening parties for Donda, all of which were attended by Kim. Kim wore matching outfits to the rapper for the first two parties, supporting him from the sideline with their children. During the third listening party, the KUWTK star made her way through the stadium to Kanye in a wedding dress, shocking fans. The pair were photographed leaving the venue holding hands. Some fans began to consider whether the event was a renewal of their vows or at least an announcement that the pair had reconciled.

Others disagreed. One fan commented on Kim‘s tweet of the event, “I’ve always thought the divorce was fake to promote the final season of KUWTK.” Others remarked, “All smoke & mirrors, that’s all it is!” and, “So she already had a wedding as a PR stunt now a divorce too?” It has since been announced that the pair remains in the process of their divorce, and Kim’s participation was solely in support of Kanye’s album. Donda was released to all streaming platforms on August 29.

Whether or not the pair will follow through with their split is yet to be seen. Coincidentally, there is one final event on their work calendar that would benefit from any added publicity. The Keeping Up With the Kardashians family deal with Hulu, debuting a new show and additional video content, will be released in the remaining few months of the year. Amongst many other suspected publicity stunts surrounding the pair, including Kanye’s brief relationship with model Irina Shayk and his feud with rapper Drake, only time will give some clarity to fans on whether or not the pair’s split was genuine.
