Riot Games has announced the upcoming changes that will be coming to the massively popular MOBA League of Legends for the 2022 Preseason. Among those changes that were teased are several item changes and reworks, a new approach to how they will balance new changes on release, and the revelation of two brand new dragons that will be coming to the game.

Although League of Legends is a constantly changing game thanks to patches, reworks, and new champions being added to the game, the time between seasons is often where Riot Games does its biggest changes. During the League of Legends preseason, which takes place between the previous and upcoming ranked seasons, the game is thrown into flux with massive changes to the game itself. During the last preseason, League of Legends completely reworked its item system. But for the preseason ahead of Season 12, Riot has revealed a bevy of updates to League of Legends.

In a new developer update video, the League of Legends dev team revealed all the changes that are coming in Preseason 2022. While previously-teased changes such as item updates and the addition of challenges so players can track their progress outside of the ranked ladder. However, the biggest change that is coming to League of Legends is two new dragons. The new Hextech Dragon will grant teams additional ability haste and attack speed, while the dragon will warp Summoner’s Rift to add portals players can use. The Chemtech Dragon, on the other hand, grants teams additional damage against low-health targets and adds patches of camouflage where players can sneak around undetected.

While many League of Legends players are apprehensive that these two new dragons, Riot has promised to balance the new dragons as appropriate. That assurance might fall on deaf ears for League of Legends players, who have been complaining about Riot’s inability to balance new champions and items. However, Riot also acknowledged that they have been learning from these issues and are improving the way that they approach the release of new content. This follows the revelation that Riot will continue adding to and adapting the items, even a year after the major League of Legends item rework.

As frustrating as the constant changes are for League of Legends players, it is this constant changing that keeps the game fresh. Riot purposefully keeps the major changes restricted to when ranked queues are not going so that the issues of imbalance aren’t as grave. With Preseason 2022 approaching, League of Legends is set for yet another massive shakeup.

League of Legends is available on PC and Mac.
