Riot Games, the developer behind the popular MOBA League of Legends, along with tactical shooter VALORANT, auto-battler Teamfight Tactics, and card game Legends of Runeterra, announced that the upcoming Sentinels of Light event will take place across all its major titles. Following the success of 2020’s Spirit Blossom event, Riot will continue to offer players of its five titles (including League of Legends: Wild Rift, the mobile and console version of League of Legends) the chance to participate in its yearly events. All of Riot’s titles, save for VALORANT, are set in the same world of Runeterra, so new characters and events impact the meta and lore of each game equally.

In this case, the main focus of the Sentinels of Light event is the newest character, Akshan. The Rogue Sentinel will become the first champion released across all games in the League of Legends universe simultaneously. Fighting with a sacred relic weapon, Akshan will be joining the fight against the Ruined King, Viego, and the ongoing Ruination event that began earlier this year. Ironically, Akshan will join League of Legends after having already been introduced to Legends of Runeterra and Teamfight Tactics.

Riot Games announced that coinciding with the new champion’s release, all of its titles will officially be participating in the Rise of the Sentinels event, with a chance for players of each game to earn unique rewards. League of Legends players will be able to purchase one of the 11 in-cannon skins for champions featured during the event, an event-exclusive Ascended Pantheon Prestige Edition skin, and will get access to a new game mode. For Wild Rift players, a new series of comics coming to the Wild Rift app, and new skins as well. Legends of Runeterra will receive a mini-expansion of new cards including Viego, Akshan, and other collectibles. There will also be a new event pass for players to participate in. Finally, Teamfight Tactics will receive new champions and classes when the next set is released on July 21.

Alongside all the new content dropping for these games, the ongoing narrative surrounding the Ruination and the Sentinels fight to restore Runeterra will be continued in each of the four games. Although VALORANT is not technically a part of this shared universe, players will have the opportunity to participate by purchasing two weapon skin bundles that are themed after the event (Ruination and Sentinels).

Riot has certainly gone above and beyond in its attempt to merge new gameplay, cosmetics, and narrative elements into one single event. Such an undertaking for just one game is hard enough, but Riot has managed to do so for all five of its very distinct titles. Whether fans are interested in hitting League of Legends‘ Summoner’s Rift to battle for supremacy, checking out a cool new VALORANTweapon skin, or just following along with the Ruination narrative, the Sentinels of Light event has something for everyone.
