A hint at the newest Batman game has just been leaked for the upcoming PlayStation 5 event on June 11, and it looks like it could be drawing influence from the much-beloved Batman Beyond animated series, even possibly serving as an adaptation of the show. Airing for three seasons on Kids’ WB during the early 2000s as part of the highly successful DC Animated Universe, this futuristic cartoon told the story of an aged Bruce Wayne passing his mantle as the defender of Gotham City to a young high school student named Terry McGinnis.

Rumors of a new Batman title being developed by Batman: Arkham Origins’ WB Games Montreal have been circling the internet since last September, with the game supposedly set to be unveiled during the now canceled E3 2020 press conference before the coronavirus pandemic halted those plans. These vague clues hinted that this hypothetical Batman game would be a continuity reboot of Rocksteady’s critically acclaimed Arkham franchise, pitting Bruce Wayne’s dark alter ego against the secret society known as the Court Of Owls. However, new developments suggest that the developer might instead be taking things in an entirely different direction.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Reddit user u/thirstyleaker13 recently posted the enticing below image, an alleged screenshot from the announcement of this new Batman game, supposedly taken from tomorrow’s PlayStation 5 console reveal event. This screenshot depicts a Batman insignia more in line with the one used in the Batman Beyond animated series than those of past games, as well as a caption reading “Capture The Knight” and logos for both the PS4 and PS5, hinting that the title may be a PlayStation console exclusive (or at least being touted as one by Sony, as console manufactures are wont to do). Given the quality of the leaked image and the timing of the post, the leak seems legitimate.

While fans were initially hesitant to embrace a new character in the iconic role of the Dark Knight, Batman Beyond was well-regarded during its three-year run thanks to its fresh take on the world of Gotham City, solid writing and great voice-acting performances from newcomer Will Friedle as rookie Caped Crusader Terry McGinnis and the ever-iconic Kevin Conroy as a retired Bruce Wayne. The show’s universe was eventually adapted into the DC Comics canon proper in 2011, and there is still demand for a fourth season even decades after Batman Beyond aired its last episode in 2001.

It remains unknown whether this leaked Batman logo is merely a nod to the classic Batman Beyond cartoon or an indication that the new game will be an adaptation of the show, but the idea of the latter would certainly be exciting for fans of Terry McGinnis’s futuristic exploits. The vibrant cyberpunk world of Neo-Gotham would look fantastic while rendered with the PS5’s much-lauded next-gen hardware, and Terry’s upgraded Batsuit and high-tech gadgets might make for some fun gameplay. The change in setting could also work from a narrative perspective with regards to Rocksteady’s Arkham universe, as 2015’s Batman: Arkham Knight famously ended with Bruce Wayne retiring from the mantle of the Dark Knight just as he did in Batman Beyond. In any case, it seems fans will have a new Batman game to look forward to during the PlayStation 5 console reveal tomorrow, regardless of who is under the famed Bat-Cowl or what period they are operating under.
