Netflix has announced that Lee Byung-Hun will both produce and star in their upcoming YA rom-com, I Believe in a Thing Called Love. The film is an adaptation of the novel of the same name, originally written by Korean American author Maurene Goo. The story, which takes inspiration from Goo’s personal love of Korean soap operas (a.k.a. K-dramas), follows the story of a naive teenager named Desi Lee as she tries to reenact K-drama tropes in real life in order to catch the attention of her crush. Yulin Kuang is set to write the adaptation, with Goo herself serving as executive producer.

THR reports that South Korean actor Lee Byung-Hun will both produce and star in the YA rom-com. Lee is set to play Desi’s father, whose obsession with K-dramas serves as one of the catalysts for the film’s plot. In a statement, Goo said:

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

I Believe in a Thing Called Love has found a home with Netflix! I’m so proud of my amazing team—Yulin, A-Major, and BH Entertainment—and it’s a thrill to finally share this exciting news.”

Lee Byung-Hun’s involvement in this project is surprising considering the actor’s reputation for taking on far more violent and action-oriented roles in the past. Lee’s resume is stacked, with the actor appearing in countless classic South Korean films (and K-dramas) such as A Bittersweet LifeI Saw the Devil, and The Age of Shadows. However, English-speaking audiences may know him best for his portrayal of Storm Shadow in 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and its sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation. Although I Believe in a Thing Called Love has yet to receive a release date, one thing is for certain: it’ll be amusing to see Lee as a K-drama-obsessed Korean dad.
