Legacies Just Completely Betrayed MG’s Character

Caution: Spoilers ahead for Legacies season 4. 

Legacieshas completely betrayed the character of MG in the latest episode of the show. Legacies is the latest spin-off of the beloved CW TV show The Vampire Diaries. It follows Hope Mikaelson, the heir to some of the most powerful supernatural bloodlines. At the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted, Hope learns to control the powers that come from her vampire, witch, and werewolf ancestry. Building off of The Vampire Diaries and its previous spin-off, The Originals, Legacies has so far been a mostly-worthy continuation of the franchise over the course of 4 seasons.

In Legacies season 4 episode 9 (“I Can’t Be the One to Stop You”), Salvatore School student aide MG received a terrible revelation from Mystic Falls High School student Ethan revealing that he had been lying to MG about his activities with Lizzie. It turns out that Ethan had agreed to help Lizzie obtain a stake made from the Salvatore School’s Red Oak Tree–the only wood capable of killing Hope–as a failsafe in case Hope ever became too dangerous.

This turn of events is fine on its own, but MG’s reaction is completely out of proportion for his character. He completely loses control and basically tells Ethan to get lost, contradicting what viewers have come to expect from MG’s attitude. Throughout Legacies, MG has always been a measured and understanding character who would never fight with his friends the way he did with Ethan. It betrays everything about MG’s content of character that has made fans of Legacies care so much about him in the first place.

Even though MG and Ethan know they are both in love with Lizzie, they have handled it maturely in the past. And this is far from the first time that Legacies’ characters have screwed up or lied to each other in order to do what they think is right. MG has been forgiving of far worse offenses, and to fight Ethan over this makes him a hypocrite. The only possible reason for MG to fight Ethan is that the writers of Legacies are simply out of ideas.

MG’s response was clearly a moment designed to manufacture drama on a show that doesn’t know where it’s going. The writers of Legacies may be adrift, but that’s no excuse to betray established characters just to juice up the plot. The characters are the heart of the show, not the other way around. To be unfaithful to the characters is to be unfaithful to the show.
