Legacies season 3, episode 14, “This Feels a Little Cult-y” mocked Midsommar by pointing out how ludicrous its story is. The story of a group of teens attending the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted, Legacies has struggled to gain the same popularity as its predecessors over its first three seasons. Some fans find the series too light-hearted, but in some instances, a lighter tone can help the show, as seen in Legacies’ Midsommar spoof.

Legacies poked fun at Midsommar with “This Feels a Little Cult-y”. As the snarky title implies, the Midsommar parody was not just a brief nod to the movie or a throwaway line. The episode revolved around a wellness retreat that turned out to be a cult, and as such, the outing recreated the entire setting and atmosphere of Midsommar, right down to the grapevine arch the characters pass through to get to the cult’s land.

Legacies‘ sense of campy humor is one of its strong suits, and the entire episode was over-the-top in its satire of the already-heightened Midsommar. Although Midsommar featured moments of dark comedy, the movie’s characters never addressed how surreal their predicament was, and seemed bizarrely unaware of the horror they were surrounded by. In contrast, Legacies saw Hope and Josie immediately recognize and talk about how weird and unsettling the entire situation was.

The joke underscored the slightly ridiculous premise of Midsommar, in which the plot centers around the idea that not one person in the relatively large group of supposedly smart students seemed to notice just how off and weird the movie’s killer cult was until it was too late. In fairness, Legacies has its own troubles with inactive, passive lead characters like Landon, but despite the cast facing down some very silly villains, the show has never seen them react in a nonplussed manner to obvious evil. Very late in Midsommar’s action, Jack Reynor’s character Christian is physically incapacitated when he and the movie’s troubled antiheroine are drugged. However, until this point, Christian and company have been safe to leave the commune whenever they like, or at the very least, viewers have not seen any evidence that the cult will hunt them down if they try to escape.

The issue seems to be less with the group getting out and more with them even realizing that they are in danger despite being surrounded by gruesome ritual suicides and blatantly creepy characters, something Legacies has fun mocking with this outing. The darkly comic episode made for a nice change of pace from a season spent focusing on Landon’s character growth, and it is a solid parody of an acclaimed movie that until now largely escaped spoofing. Mocking the more absurd elements of a recent genre hit like Midsommar is a perfect fit for the campier, more over-the-top tone of Legacies.
