Warning: Spoilers for Legacies season 4, episode 12, “Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost.”

Although Legacies season 4 did technically bring Landon back from the dead, the series needs to revive him for good to fix Hope’s character transformation. Fans of Legacies may have wanted to see the show focus on Landon and Hope’s relationship less in season 4, but it is fair to say that few viewers could have predicted how the series would go about achieving this. After the first three seasons of the series devoted most of their screen time to Landon and Hope’s “will they won’t they” back and forth dynamic, Legacies season 4 finally put an end to their plot by killing off Landon.

At least, that seemed to be the case for a few episodes. Like Legacies season 4 breakout Lizzie, Landon came back from the dead, although he was not as lucky as that Heretic. In the ending of season 4, episode 12, “Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost,” Landon’s revival was revealed to be temporary as he was sent back to Limbo, thus limiting the potential of both his and Hope’s character development.

The revelation that Landon’s resurrection was (once again) temporary and he was sent back to purgatory was a dispiriting one for many fans, as it seemingly confirmed the belief that Legacies season 4 wants to keep him around without actually reviving him for good. While this has resulted in frustrating stop-start stories as he has been trapped in purgatory, it is also terrible for Hope’s dark turn. Since Hope became the Tribrid and turned off her humanity, she is rapidly becoming the evilest character in the history of Legacies, and Landon not returning is only making this worse.

While Hope’s Tribrid status means she is physically nigh-on unstoppable, her choice to turn off her humanity makes her impossible to reason with as well. Although many old friends, teachers, and even frenemies like Lizzie have attempted to reach her in Legacies season 4, Hope’s former love interest could potentially be key to bringing back her humanity. As such, Landon’s continuing stay in Limbo, which results in their continued distance from each other, isn’t helping anyone’s story in Legacies season 4. While this might be ameliorated if Landon’s own Limbo plot was resulting in dramatic character development for him, instead, it is essentially recreating his season 3 story.

While characters like Jed have had solid character development in Legacies season 4, Landon’s time in Limbo has felt a lot like his time in the prison world circa season 3. Admittedly, there is no heroic Hope to save him this time around since she’s not only evil with her humanity turned off but turned it off to kill Landon in the first place as part of a plot to defeat Malivore. Still, Landon is essentially biding time awaiting salvation, much like Hope is still going from place to place as an emotionless villain, with the development of both characters being inhibited by their storylines. Until Landon lives again in Legacies season 4, it’s unlikely his love interest will ever get her humanity back—meaning viewers may grow less and less interested in waiting for this development.
