While Landon Kirby ended up being wasted in the series finale, Legacies season 5 would have salvaged the character arc of Hope Mikaelson’s love interest. Landon Kirby did not have an easy time of it in the four seasons of Legacies. Despite being one of the lead characters of Legacies, Landon spent years stuck in the role of the show’s resident dude in distress.

During years of “will they won’t they” relationship drama with Legacies heroine Hope Mikaelson, Landon was often thrown into peril solely so that his more powerful paramour could save him. This didn’t always work, with Legacies star Landon dying nine times in the first three seasons of the series alone. This made it somewhat fitting when the Legacies season 4 finale (which became the show’s series finale when Legacies was canceled) left Landon as the ferryman between life on earth and the afterlife.

However, despite how appropriate Landon’s many deaths made his new job, the series finale of Legacies still left Landon in a weird place. As the new Ferryman of Limbo, he had started to lose his human emotions as the toll exacted for resurrecting his friends. It was a very strange, abrupt twist for one of the most compassionate and emotional characters on Legacies and called to mind Hope’s transformation into the Tribrid, which saw her turn off her humanity and become the show’s main villain for much of season 4 as a result. Evidently, the creative team behind Legacies intended to put Landon through the tough task of regaining his humanity throughout Legacies season 5, but the show’s cancelation meant that they never got the chance.

Landon Would Have Been Important For Legacies Season 5

Landon was wasted in Legacies season 4 as he spent most of the final season of Legacies stranded in the afterlife with Alaric and the Necromancer. Unquestionably, Legacies season 5 would have paid off this slow setup as Landon would have played a big role in helping his friends from the other side. However, viewers never got to see Landon utilize his awesome new powers as the Legacies series finale cut his story short. Not only did Legacies season 4 leave Landon stuck in purgatory for too long, but the show’s cancelation soon ensured that his character development would forever remain there.

Landon’s role as the Ferryman had a lot of promising avenues for development in Legacies season 5. For one thing, his ability to bring anyone back from the dead (alongside the campy tone of Legacies) means Landon could have revived characters from Legacies, The Originals, and The Vampire Diariesif he had the chance. Not only that but after Legacies season 4 dwelled on Hope’s villainous Tribrid turn for so long, Legacies season 5 could have offered another alternative look at what gaining powers and losing human emotions did to one of the show’s heroes. Hope and Landon’s love story worked because the pair were never too similar, meaning Legacies season 5 could have underlined the contrast between them by depicting how Landon reacted to going through something similar to Hope’s season 4 journey.
